I used to have the text message notification my Samsung Galaxy A21S as a
loud klaxon.

I changed to something else for a reason that I cannot remember.

It is now set back to the klaxon but all I get is a BING-BONG type
notification and cannot change it back. I have tried and tried but no luck.

Can anyone suggest anything I might have missed? Sure it will be
something obvious!

Lots of possibilities - updates of an app' , notification tones, but most likely you are now running Google messages instead of the phones own SMS app' and haven't noticed. Google thinks it is cute, and although it uses the web rather than real SMS for known Google subscribers, you don't get advice of receipt and the logs appear wrong.

I lost my text message notificationos (Pixel) following the Android 14
update. I cannot remember the detail but I think it was a phone
setting rather than a setting in the app. I resolved the problem by
changing some settings to default then setting it up sounds again.

As far as I know I am just typing the SMS directly into the phone and
receiving on the phone.

Not got any further with this.

One though I had is that I use my own sound files (MP3 I think) for the
alert. Could a software update have changed the way these are handled?
