and he should be back at work in Victoria by now. Third time now that he
and his wife visited and we've had a lot of very interesting
conversations in the short time he was here.

His name I can publish here - Joe Wilson - since he has a thriving
little business in Victoria called *Heritage Motorsport*. He used to
have a website but closed it down since he was on the verge of
retirement a few years back. What does he do? He makes rally car
suspensions systems and, these days, focuses on shockers and other major
components like Mcpherson Struts. He will build you a complete fully
adjustable Mcpherson strut for your rally car.

He does still have a Facebook page;

https://www.facebook.com/heritagemotorsport27/

Joe started out life as a fitter/machinist, no motor mechanic training
whatsoever. He got into rallying early in his trade career after a
machining apprenticeship at the Herald Sun newspaper. Since then his
working life has revolved around cars and the rally scene. You can see
some examples of his craft on his Facebook page. He once used to
manufacture OEM Bilstein shocks. I think I have mentioned Joe on
aus.cars once before. Even though Joe isn't a qualified mechanic, he is
way more *relevant* to the automotive industry than any Noddy who claims
to be and that's because he has actually done an apprenticeship in a
related field. He has also been able to transfer the knowledge and
skills from the machining trade to automotive and, in the process, has
become a steering and suspension specialist beyond compare going beyond
mere repairs to design and manufacture. I was really impressed by his
strut vernier adjustment for caster and camber - really impressive and
gives a lot of flexibility with steering geometry.

Did I mention Joe does a lot of engine building for rally cars as well.
With that in mind, I related Darren's tale of the reliable *stock* 350
Chev with a Holley 1150 that Darren claims put out 600 HP. We discussed
air flow and Joe said that engine would be lucky to rev much past 6,000
RPM so would never flow the 1150 CFM that carb was capable of. After a
big laugh about that, and a long discussion about what would be required
in order to get that engine to rev to 10,000+ RPM, I mentioned that
Darren *claimed* to have fitted a Ford 4V head to the Chev block. When
the laughter subsided, I went on to point out that the Chev block had 5
head bolts per cylinder arranged in the shape of a pentagon whereas the
Ford head was equipped with only 4 bolts per cylinder arranged in the
shape of a square. Well, one cannot drill and tap new holes willy nilly
in a block. That's because the original sites had a strengthening boss
cast into the head during manufacture. If you move the tapped holes
outside that immediate area you run into issues with little seemingly
unimportant *details* like *water jackets*. IOW, the area will be too
thin to prevent block distortion due to tension forces - and that's bad.
So is having head bolts poking through water jackets. Drilling the
*head* to suit different block bolt locations is equally fraught. You
run into the same water jacket issues but but with compression forces
and you also risk of fouling the valve ports. Real machinists understand
this - Joe sure did. He would still be laughing at Darren's *bullshit*.
Didn't have time to get onto the topic of Darren's masterful work on
Les' Elise engine. What a disaster that turned out to be for poor old
Les. Would have made an interesting topic of discussion for us.

I'm sure Krypsis is frantically doing a google image search as we speak
in an effort to pad out his bullshit with *more* bullshit :)

A few interesting points in his fairytale worth noting. Firstly, I don't
know why his "mate" bothers making adjustable strut housings when you
can buy them on ebay for most cars at cheaper than dirt prices.

Secondly, since when did "fitter/machinist" ever become motor trade
related?

Thirdly, and probably most comical of the lot, would be who the *fuck*
"rallies" a Triumph 2500? The fucking safety car would be quicker :)

I have a better idea. Why don't *you* ask him direct? You have Joe's
work phone and email on his Facebook page so there's nothing stopping
you. While you're at it, ask him if he knows *me* and if he was a
visitor here recently. He'll be up your way shortly, or at least to the
Sunny Coast. Work related I think and he's flying up sans missus this
time round!

See my response to Grumpy. I don't give a shit who the person is.

Joe makes the ones for the cars that don't have EBay items available. He
is a *specialist jobbing shop* making custom orders. You might not
understand this but a lot of the EBay stuff available is, to put it
politely, utter crap. He also designs and builds to *customer
requirements*. Can't get that sort of service on EBay.

Ask Joe! He has been *heavily involved* in the motor trade from the 80s
and as a hobby prior to that. Any good fitter/machinist can turn their
hand to a number of other trades Darren. But you wouldn't know that
since you have never done *any apprenticeship ever*.

Depends on the engine you have in it Darren.

Oh, and thanks again for proving you read my every post! ;-)

Certainly wouldn't be quick if it still had its original engine but no
mention on the Facebook page what if any mods have been done to it, lots
of options that might fit under the bonnet:-)

Yeah, but it's a Triumph 2500for fuck's sake. You wouldn't be seen dead

It seems obvious to ring the man if he doubts your claim rather than

Your engines don't last two laps, who the fuck would want to race one of
your dud builds? You're opinion is worthless in any event you toxic

LOL, I remember working on one when it was only a few years old, the
problem was lack of power, the owner had taken it to numerous workshops
and no one had made much of an improvement, I managed a to make a slight
improvement but in the end I think the owner gave up and sold it.
If he still had it today I would recommend swapping the engine for a
90's model Toyota 2.5 I6 which would make more than double the power:-)

They were typical of most things with 4 wheels that Triumph made: Total
heaps of shit. They made world conquering bikes in their day, but their
cars were hopeless.

Short answer, they are stupid beyond belief.

The only reason I put his Facebook page up is because it is *public
information*. After all he is in business and he deals with the public,
albeit a limited subset of the public.

It might have an EVO engine in it. Joe mentioned working on EVO engines
a lot but I don't recall him saying his rally car had such in it. It
might well have.

Anyway, Darren proved beyond any doubt his total lack of expertise in
engine building when he *failed* to check valve to piston clearance on
Les' Elise engine. What surprised me even more was that *Daryl* found
the task too onerous. What must be noted in that check is that it isn't
enough to ensure they don't touch when rotating the engine *manually*,
the engine builder must ensure adequate clearance to allow for overshoot
of the valve. A standard engine typically requires 0.080" to 0.100". For
a performance oriented engine like the 5 valve unit used in the Elise,
you would need to look closely at valve spring rates, camshaft profile
and expected RPM range. That may require a much greater than standard
clearance. Certainly, when fitting a shim headgasket to a performance
oriented engine, you would *never assume* you have adequate clearance or
you will get exactly what Les got from Darren's work - a blown engine.

Joe's business, Darren, is *Heritage Motorsport*. Know what *heritage*
means Darren? Obviously not. In the 70s, when you were in short pants,
the Triumph 2000 series were quite popular rally cars.

I'm afraid that provides me with no compulsion to act as a go-between. I
know Joe personally. You want to see if Joe knows someone, from only a
photo, I suggest the onus falls upon *you* to make the call. Or you
could simply send him an email. Be aware that he is a rather busy chap
and is off to Thailand at the end of June. He has a lot of product to
get out the door prior to his OS trip, probably involving some of those
components he manufactured and has featured on his Facebook page.

> The Sunny Coast is a bloody long way from where I am.

It's in Queensland, you're in Queensland, what more do you want?

> As usual you squib out on anything asked of you.

I seem to recall *providing* a name and phone number in the past along
with a suggestion you, or Darren, ring it. That call went unmade.

On this occasion, I have provided a name, a number, plus photos (on
Facebook) yet again you demur.

There are squibbers here but I'm not one. Has Darren shown you his
*claimed* trade papers yet? No?? There one huge squib right there.
