I had a massive Acacia ( Mimosa) tree, 50ft high and 40 years+ old. but it came down in the storms last winter. I had it cut up. Now , a few yards away, I have noticed what looks like a seedling growing. Its about two inches tall right now. Could it be a sapling off the original tree stump thats run under the garden and come up?

Its not in the most ideal place as its on the front of my drive ( where I had another couple of trees cut down earlier in the year) but I would love to nurture this plant ling. I would value any advice on doing this. There isnt much online. Should I dig it up and pot it and try to keep it going or should I try and replant it in a better position or just leave it and hope for the best? Is there any way I can protect it/ nurture it through winter? Its on an East facing bank on my front garden. I live in SE Cornwall.

I don't know if they sucker, but I can't find any mention of it. But
they do set seed, and can be grown from seed, so my bet would be that
it's a seedling.

By all means pot it up into some free-draining compost; I would use a
good-quality ericaceous compost such as Vitax, Humax or Melcourt
(Sylvagrow) - these people do Melcourt composts in East Cornwall:
Tamar View Nurseries, Carkeel, Saltash PL12 6PH, or Duchy Of Cornwall
Nursery, Cott Road, Lostwithiel PL22 0HW; see
https://melcourt.co.uk/where-to-buy/ . Avoid Westland IMO. Add some
grit, say one part grit to three compost. Keep it sheltered over the
winter, because as a very young plant it's more susceptible to frosts
etc than a mature tree. Do you have a greenhouse or conservatory to
overwinter it in?

But you were very lucky to have had the original for forty years. They
used to be fairly common down here in West Cornwall, but cold winters
over the decades gradually saw them off, and I haven't seen any for
many years. They are wonderful when in full bloom.

Gardening in West Cornwall, very mild, sheltered
from the West, but open to the North and East.
