Police have fired a 'speed kills' warning as they crack down on speeding offences. Officers from a neighbourhood team were out in Whiddon Down yesterday (Friday, September 23) to carry out speed enforcement.

In a tweet shared to the Tavistock Police Twitter account, a spokesperson said that while most drivers did keep to the speed limit in the area, some reached speeds between 41-45mph. The spokesperson also urged motorists to stick to speed limits.

The full tweet said: "Your Neighbourhood team carried out speed enforcement at Whiddon Down this afternoon. On the whole drivers were keeping to the limit however seven drivers between 35-40 and two between 41-45mph. Speed kills so please stick to the limit.#fatal5."

According to the Government website, the minimum penalty for speeding is a £100 fine and three penalty points added to your licence. Drivers could also be disqualified from driving if they build up 12 or more penalty points within a period of three years.

If you’re stopped by the police, they can:

Give you a verbal warning
Give or send you a fixed penalty notice
Order you to go to court - you’ll be sent a letter telling you what to do

Within 14 days of your car being caught by a speeding camera you’ll be sent a:

Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP)
Section 172 notice
You must return the Section 172 notice within 28 days, telling the police who was driving the car.
You may have to go to court if you ignore the notice.
