A man has denied assaulting a cyclist leaving him “covered in blood”.

James Crammen was produced at Teesside Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday to face the charge. The 25-year-old denied assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

It is alleged Crammen “struck” the man “straight in his right eye from behind” as he passed him near a Hartlepool pub. The attack is alleged to have occurred on January 29.

Prosecutor Chris Tame told how the alleged victim was on his own, riding his pedal cycle, on his way home. He had just passed a social club when Crammen allegedly “struck” him “straight in his right eye”.

The alleged attack reportedly made him “fall to the floor”. Mr Tame added that the alleged victim “felt dizzy”, “blacked out for a few seconds” and his face was “covered in blood”.

The Middlesbrough court heard how the case is suitable for summary trial. Georgia Wilkinson, mitigating, agreed with the prosecution's submissions.

The magistrates’ bench accepted jurisdiction and Crammen, who appeared via video link from Holme House Prison wearing a black and white t-shirt, agreed for the trial to take place at the magistrates’ court.

Crammen spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and enter a not guilty plea to the charge. The chair of the bench stated that Crammen will be released from prison on November 15.

He will stand trial at Teesside Magistrates’ Court on December 2. He was granted unconditional bail until that date.
