Could some one please reccommend a good tool for bulb planting?
I have bought a Burgan Ball long handled planter with a straight tube, after cutting one slug it jams up and I have to dig it out with a screwdriver. I paid £37 for it and now feel rather stupid.

Have you tried rocking the planter back and forth and to each side, and
rotating it a little, as you push it into the soil? That should make the
plug slightly smaller and less likely to grip the steel of the planter,
and hopefully easier to push out.

The plug should push out as you push the planter in to do the next hole

Oh I have a planter that you can spring apart, and its tapered, but in
thick clay it sticks no matter what.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Draper-21861-3082-Bulb-Planter/dp/B00023T8RG/

They are all crap, but at least that one is cheap crap.

I planted over a hundred bulbs last year, I got as far as three using
that planter ;-)

I use a trowel (in bare earth and pots) and a narrow-blade spade when
planting bulbs in grass.

Almost done, just a few more tulips to go

I have a similar one to that. It works fairly well so long as I remember
to twist it, and not just push into the ground. I broke the last one
when I forgot to twist - it isn't really strong enough.

We were on Bagshot sand before we moved here, but not on heavy clay. It
was the sand where I broke it; I wouldn't dare try the new one on dry clay.
