Is there an easy way to count the number of files in a folder? Short of
actually doing it manually. The files (images) all have individual names
rather than a sequence of numbers.

Perhaps I'm missing something but surely if you open the folder as a finder
window it will show you the total?

In a terminal, type "ls | wc -l"

(This will give the wrong answer if any of the filenames contain
linefeeds, but that's unlikely.)

That command also includes sub-folders and other items - but that may not matter in
Graeme's case of course if the folder only contains files. Sorry to appear pedantic ;)

Enabler Finder's status bar.

Or if you don't like that being there, go to Columns view with Preview
enabled (View/Show Preview): cmd-a will select them all and the preview
column will say "X items"

You can select the files in the folder and it'll tell you how many files you've selected.
And right clicking you can move all the selected files to a new folder , which I find useful.

Doh! Find info does indeed tell you how many items, after the size!

List view (Command-2 is the shortcut) always shows the number of items
being displayed in the bottom bar (the 'footer') of the window.

So if you're looking at a folder that has two folders in it, each with
18 items (files or folders) it says "2 items" if you're only displaying
the folders, or "38 items" if you've expanded both folders, or "20
items" if you've only expanded one folder.

Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

I have used nothing but Column view since I started using Macs (eons
ago). The other options seem to be relatively useless to me. Not as
pretty as icons of course, but..

John

(Using Command-1, 2, 3 and 4 makes switching views a lightning
manoeuvre.)

These are folders of images so icon view is actually more use generally.
It's handy to know how many files are in each individual folder and, as
been pointed out, get info does the job simply.

You can also use the View menu 'Show Status Bar' option and it's display
it at the bottom of every window as you open it.
