I must be missing something here. When did it become compulsary, essential,
necessary or even desirable to have a foreign holiday?

You know that you're not missing anything, but here goes anyway. :-)
Compulsory - Never
Essential - Never
Necessary - Never
Desirable - For some, yes, for many and varied reasons, exploration,
weather, aurora borealis etc.

It seemed to become essential the day the Government said holiday makers
couldn't go.

I often ask myself that question, especially since when I was a little
kid, Mum and Dad ran their own small retail business so never really
had an annual holiday in this country. I don't think either of them
have ever been abroad in their lives - a total of 180 years.

That was probably my point. I was really thinking that their idea of a
holiday was to queue at an airport in order to lie on a beach in the sun.
Then queue to come home.

Airport queues are a result of cheap flights making foreign holidays
affordable to the riff riff,
Flying and travelling overseas used to be such a pleasure. :-)

I much prefer people going on foreign holidays and hope it all goes back
to the way it was pre-pandemic.

This would leave more space for me to enjoy the UK, some of which I
still need to visit - I have no desire for foreign holidays, far too
much hassle...

+1

Other than school trips, I only left the UK - when I was paid to leave
the UK.

Hear, hear :-)

I've not been to the Lake District so would love to go there.

It is beautiful - but don't go on a motorhome like I did[1]. Much of
the Lake District has a 6'6" width limit. I measured my rented
motorhome, and at its widest point it was 6'8". Close enough, I thought.

I discovered, several miles in, a bridge that said it was 6'9" wide.
Faced with going over it or reversing back along a single track road for
an unknown distance until there would be room to turn round, I decided
to edge forward. With me alternately looking ahead and watching the
mirror on my side and Wife leaning out of the passenger window and
calling back that there was still a little bit of daylight between the
parapet and the side of the vehicle, we did get through but we made sure
we never used that road again.

I was younger and fitter then, which was important because some of the
most picturesque sights could only be reached on foot.

Jim

[1] At work, I was involved with a "mission critical" task and I was
told that I couldn't take leave until it was finished, so I couldn't
book anything ahead. It was finished on a Thursday, proved to work the
next day, and I was told that I could take the next couple of weeks off
because there would be nothing for me to do. Friday afternoon I found a
motor caravan for hire that was still available, Saturday morning I
collected it and drove it home, and Saturday afternoon we drove off with
a couple of suitcases and not much idea of where we were going. That is
how we ended up going to the Lake District.

Only since people haven't been able to do foreign holidays.
Personally there are enough areas of this country that I still have to
explore. It's fine for those who like such things - my own children go
on foreign holidays
Personally I can think of nothing worse than being cooped up in an
aeroplane then on reaching the destination lying on a beach in the sun
all day
Cruises would not be too bad if it wasn't for all that water!
I suppose I could do a river cruise where I could see dry land
No - I'll stick to England, Ireland Scotland or Wales

I guess I've been kicked out of the choir ;)

We spend a lot of time each year touring the UK but also try to have at
least one 'foreign' holiday each year. The different cultures, sights
and experiences add to our life's pleasures.

Last year's and this year's foreign holidays have been rolled forward to
2022 (all being well) so we shall be enjoying two trips overseas next
year as well as the UK ones.

I have never felt the need to spend more than an hour or two on even an

I think it was mainly because you could mostly be sure of getting some nice
weather . Now our beauty spots are heaving with tourists and can’t cope
with the influx … Over the years our resorts got used to less people, and
now can’t cope …
