In the second phase of the County Championship we seem to have teams with fractional losses and draws (and fractional points for batting and bowling as well)

For example Hampshire have
Played 3
Won 1
Lost 0.5
Drawn 1.5
Batting Points 1.5
Bowling Points 9
Total Points 38.5

How does this happen? Do the games played against the team that was in your Group in the first phase count as half games for the second stage?

How can you lose a quarter of two drawn matches?

I'm not sure it's an improvement, though, as it replaces fractional
complexity with what one might call "additional complexity", as the
W+D+L values mostly don't add up to the figure in the M(atches) column.
It's true that the M values have a suffix of an asterisk, but nowhere
does it seem to tell you what the asterisk represents.

Oh, for the simplicity of a single table of 18 counties playing 17 matches each with the Champion County finishing top or counties tying at the top. . RH

That's because it simply doesn't include the matches from the group stage, except in the Points column.

The asterisk means "including the match in progress", which obviously doesn't have a result yet, but is included to show bonus points so far.

despite the complexity of the format we have 4 teams contesting the title in the
last round. not sure what the teams in the 2 other groups are playing for, as i
havnt read the small print, but it looks like its gonna be an interesting end
to the season if the warm weather holds up into next week.

Just better prize money, I think. Unless they decide to rejig the format
again for next season, in which case a county's position in the final
table might affect the division in which they start next season.

Indeed. Unfortunately I don't think the forecast is too encouraging ATM.
