Just been in the greenhouse to have a quick look and see if anything's
waking up. I'll say - but it's not what I expected. Hundreds of bloody
ants already looking round, and crawling under pots ready to excavate
them! I've given them something "sweet" to take back to their queen...

Ants in mid-February! Whatever next?

There was a green woodpecker on our lawn today. I think its found the
ants... which suggests some activity outdoors.

Funnily enough, we watched one feeding on our lawn for about 20 minutes
on Sunday morning. I assumed it was after grubs, as it seemed too early
for ants. I was obviously wrong, but it could be that until this week,
we'd had very little rain to dissuade the ants from moving around.

I suspect that they are after chafer grubs. We don't often see green
woodpeckers here but do get Great and very occasionally lesser spotted
woodpeckers on the feeder. Greater is surprising nervous for such a big
bird with a formidably sharp beak. Messy feeder though.

Lesser is pretty much the same paint job but on a roughly sparrow sized
bird. Most recent unusual sighting on my conifers was a goldcrest. About
the same size as a wren but with a nice bright yellow flash on the head.
