Hi:

I thought RAID was supposed to make things easier...

I returned the problematic IcyBox to Amazon Germany (it took two months to do
this, because of Brexit, but that's another story). Fed up with IcyBox, I
bought a Yottamaster. Similar set up, but aluminium, nice and quiet, five
bays. RAID 5 structure. Running nicely.

Last week one of the drives failed. Fair enough. Drives fail, that's why you
use RAID. I replaced it, and there's a pink light flashing to tell me it's
rebuilding the RAID structure.

Problem 1. I can't access my data while it's rebuilding. I thought it would
trundle along on only four drives while it was rebuilding, but apparently
not.

Problem 2. (More annoying) Since it won't mount on the Mac, it keeps going to
sleep. If I try to access it using Disk Utility ("Disk is unreadable - Erase,
Ignore, Eject?") it bounces back to life and starts rebuilding again, only to
fall asleep ten minutes later. I know from (painful) experience it will take
the best part of 36 hours to rebuild. I've done all the obvious things, like
turning off "Put hard disks to sleep whenever possible". Third party apps
like "Keep Drive Spinning" won't recognise an unmounted drive.

So I have to turn to you lot again. Any help? Any thoughts?

I have to say I've never heard of a Yottamaster.

That is... surprising. RAID is supposed to be all about availability.

The FAQ says:

"The product has auto-sleep function, youcan cancel/adjust the sleep time.
Please go to our official website to download the firmware. Link:
https://www.yottamaster.com/?route=common/driver Please select Driver
download>>Sleep Time Setting-Firmware update for 4/5 Bay HDD Enclosure.
There is a document in the compressed package explaining the detailed
operation steps. Or we uploaded an operation video to Youtube, please refer
to the operation steps of this video. Link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULQiSTOrJok If you have any questions,
please contact: supports@yottamaster.com"

Of course the 'driver download' link doesn't work, but this appears to be
it:
https://support.yottamaster.com/download

(the tool appears to be Windows only)

I think you'll have to ask Yottamaster, since those things are specific to
the firmware of the unit.

TBH I'm not a fan of sketchy hardware RAID solutions where my data would be
locked up behind some dubious firmware and Chinese support :-(

Why bother with RAID at all? Nothing but misery.
16 or even 20 TB disks are quite affordable nowadays,
and if you are paranoid about data you can buy a pair
and mirror them,
