Funny. I thought Morgan got swallowed up by some Indian company years
ago. Reminds me a little of the Kirkham factory in Poland, but the
Morgan operation looks *far* more sophisticated and modern :)

Interesting that they can sell and many as they can make.
The 3 wheeler is very odd and I don't understand why anyone would want
one but their other models look good.

Obviously a Cobra replica but I've never heard of Kirkham.
BTW I'm picking up my "roadster" on Wednesday, I told the boys that
their mother was giving me grief about buying it so they sorted her out:-)

Not since 2019 when it bought by an Italian investment company.

They've been around for some time. As far as I'm aware they're the only
"true to form" replica builder in that their car is an exact copy of the
original AC Cobra down to the hand made aluminium body. They can even be
had in the exact same mechanical package as the originals with a 427 FE
big block engine and original style "knock off" Halibrand wheels.

Nice, they seem to pretty rare in Australia.

There was one at Motorclassica a few years ago I believe, but apart from
that I've never seen another one here. They're pretty impressive for
something that is beaten into shape with a mallet :)

It's a toy for those who have too much money. Morgan make it because
that was their tradition, it isn't much different to the cars they made
in the 1920s.

I'm not sure how they get it past the modern safety requirements, a mate
of mine, a fellow apprentice, had a 1928 two speed aero model, it was a
deathtrap, but lots of fun. It had a 1 litre J.A.P. vee twin out front
from a Brough Superior SS100 motor bike. You didn't get into it, you
put it on, it had a hand throttle because there wasn't room for 3
pedals, it a rollover, you were dead.

My greatest memory of it was sliding several times round a local
roundabout 2am on a Sunday morning with both of us somewhat inebriated.
A cop pulled us over for disturbing the peace which was fair enough, we
certainly were, but we got out of it somehow.

Fair enough, the Morgans were in charge when I did a tour of the
factory, but that was about 10 years ago.

My wife comes from Malvern, her uncle spent his career working for Morgans.

From the Morgan Australia website,
"Supply and importation of new Morgan cars to the Australian market,
with our unique Australian Design Rule technical requirements (ADRs), is
currently not possible."
Considering the very low numbers and the low kms they are likely to be
driven you would think that they would make exceptions but no, our
bureaucrats must be bureaucrats and follow the rules to the letter.
Same problem for ICV's (individually constructed vehicles), its getting
more and more difficult to get them registered due to over zealous
regulations that don't make a lot of sense for low volume cars.

Well, sort of. You could also make the "one rule for all and no
exceptions" argument which is really the only fair system for everyone.

There is _some_ grey in the rules with regards to replicas. At the
moment there is come debate amongst the state regulatory bodies and the
club scene about replica vehicles in that if you build a replica of a
car that was made in 1965 and it's an authentic "true to form" replica
then the rules that applied to the 1965 original apply equally to the
current day replica vehicle.

The sticking point is how you define "replica" and there are many
arguments as to what it should be. The issue is also not helped by
idiots who think any car could be a "replica" of another, like the
fuckwit who currently has a 2004 Monaro on a club permit as a "replica"
of a HK Monaro.

Rubbish :) About the *only* thing it has in common with the contraptions
they made a hundred years ago is the silhouette. Everything else is
completely different and made to comply with modern standards.

Have a read here and watch the video in the second link. You'll see that
they are very different to the rickety old shitfighters you remember:

Of course it has to comply, but it still has 3 wheels, 2 seat, and in
the version in this clip a vee twin hanging in fresh air out front. It
still has a light aluminium body on a wooden frame. It has modern
suspension and a gearbox rather than chain drive, but it's more than a
similar silhouette.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAFEJmF1-zk

Hadn't seen that monstrosity in your clip before, it loses the spirit of
the thing, may as well have a 4 wheeler.

The one that my mate had would have had negative stars, but this was the
early 60s and nobody cared, they cared even less in 1928 when it was made.

These were more deadly, there were a couple owned by other apprentices,
they had a tendency to invert themselves. They had front wheel drive and
inboard brakes, sounds good but the oil seals weren't.

I think the problem is too many rules, one set for ICV's, another for
hotrods, another set for replicas etc.

LOL, maybe the problem is a few stupid people screw things up for the

Inboard brakes generate heat, lots of it. Took quite a while for
designers to improve airflow and engineers to improve seal
types/materials in order to cope with all that heat.

On the positive side for people who didn't have a lot of money to spend
on a proper car it was a cheap alternative to a motorbike.
The first car I can remember riding in was my grandfathers 1929 Chev, I
was born in 1952 so it was an old car by then but it was a huge tank
compared to the BSA or Morgan 3 wheelers.

Back in 1966 I was given a 1928 Chevvy with a Holden body. Unfortunately
we moved to WA, I couldn't afford to transport it, and couldn't find
anybody who wanted to take it. I suppose that it went to the scrappy - a
bit of a tragedy.

It would be now, but back then it was just an old bomb that few people
would have wanted.

Like any Commodore today.....
