Can someone knowledgeable, other than the OP recommend this purchase.
I don't know whether it's Windows 10 updates or something equally
insidious frequently throwing my PCs into disarray.

I used to recommend the AVG free product, until they went downhill with
a takeover, and Avast tried to monetize users by, er, spying?

Today AVG is bloated with alarmist notifications, the scourge of nasties
out there may be bad, but you will soon wonder if AVG is also one of them.

Download a trial and see how you get on, or have a look at Sophos Home.

To be honest, Microsoft's built-in AV should cover most users, if you
are also up to date with all patches, and not habitually into surfing
crazy stuff.

My bad, I saw they'd "merged" but they seem to have the avast pop up
marketing ethos on merger, see Brian info folk on it on you tube

What about kaspersky free?
Supplemented by malwarebytes*

* Kaspersky does not like malwarebytes active shield, so use
malwarebytes as a stand alone on demand scanner.

saying what everyone is saying about avast marketing and has a great

Had the PC go into treacle mode this afternoon while crunching some big
spreadsheets and copying images into Word. A quick check with Task
Manager to try to figure what was going on showed Avast stealing 25% of
CPU.

I havn't used AVG / Avast for virus protection for ages, but I did have
an installed but supposedly unused copy of the Avast secure browser. Not
any more.

Do bitdefender still do a free version?

Sadly no more:
https://www.bitdefender.co.uk/solutions/free.html

What is the status of Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition?

We are focusing product development around multi-platform protection
and as a result, we are retiring Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition
for Windows starting on December.

Bitdefender values its customers and user base, all our Bitdefender
Antivirus Free users will receive privately (via email) a special
discounted offer for Bitdefender Total Security.

What are opinions about Sophos home free?

Sophos Home Free is unfortunately is no longer. They have the trial
product instead.

A sensible looking suite with useful (for me) remote configuration. No
alarmist dialogs like AVG/Avast.

Bit hard for me to quantify if it is any "better" than the current
Microsoft Defender on W10 though. In fact, Defender is now looking
positively feature laden in comparison and that works in comparison with
their malicious software removal tool, and a regularly patched OS.

Admittedly, I don't have the use case others do; most of our bare
internet use is not on that platform. I'm not that promiscuous in any
net behaviour, I don't game, and disabling windows updates is absolutely
my last thought in anything to do with Windows.

Others may differ, which may probably influence their decision to add
more layers of security to their configuration.

Sadly, it seems as if the choice of free AV is dwindling.
