During lockdown, swmbo has accumulated a large pile of these compostable
bags from Aldi click & collect.

Do they add any thing to a compost, apart from volume!

Tried to take them to the council garden waste, but they would not
accept them - the argument being we do not take bags!

AIUI they aren't very compostable. They need very specific conditions
which you won't find in your garden bin.

See also "greenwash"...

They vanish PDQ in my heap at >60C when hot. But they also make decent
firelighters so many of them get used up that way.

Curiously they are *not* welcome in my council's green waste stream.

Unfortunately they are only compostable in specialist composters, most
councils dont have them and it is basically dishonest to put
"Compostable" on the bags

A year or two ago I bought some compostable bags for my kitchen pedal
bin, into which I put kitchen waste, mostly plate scrapings and
vegetable waste, the occasional bone etc. As there's only me here now,
I only need about one bag per week. The first time I lifted the bag
out of the pedal bin, the bottom fell out and emptied the contents all
over the kitchen floor, because the bag had 'composted' and rotted
away.

I don't use them any more.

Around my way the council* provide provide compostable bags as part of
the waste collection. They want them used for waste food collection but
they can be composted in a domestic compost heap. I've put a lot of
these bags in my compost bins with no sign of them 9 months later when
emptying the bins.

The bags are unsuitable for collecting your shopping. They are not
particularly strong and once punctured they can tear easily. They must
be stored in a dry place and out of the sun. I assume they are starch based.

*Although council branded they are supplied by the waste/dustbin
collection contractor.
