When re-potting an elderly Phalaenopsis orchid, sadly I some how managed
to break off the top leaf at its base. Is there any hope for it?

Unless you're desperate for its space, why not wait and see? It
shouldn't take more than 2 - 3 months for a new leaf to appear. If crown
rot appears, treat it with hydrogen peroxide.

I've been very patient and now at last things are moving. There is a
very tiny new leaf/shoot in the middle, but also two flower shoots/arial
roots are starting to appear.

Good to hear. I hope at least one of the new growths will result in flowers.
