If anybody knows of any groups that are still actually active they'd
recommend, very keen... total n00b that I am right now.

Only this one - unless you use SeaMonkey, that's one that is still fairly sane.

Haven't had any recent problems with it. I keep wondering if I should change
but it's like an old pair of slippers - familiar & comfortable.

Yes, I know some, but I won't tell. (not knowing you)
Good groups are rare and easily spoiled.

Hint: get a text only newsserver, eternal september for example,
and a client that can show you the full group list,
and that can sort by the number of postings in each group.

Then look at the groups with names that sounds promising,
and still have flow.
Don't barge in, lurk, get the feel of who is who,
and start slowly.
Don't pick quarrels with the regulars. (at first)

I thoroughly recommend eternal-september too, plus it’s free :) I would
also recommend the Usenet client if you don’t mind paying a reasonably
priced license fee. On iOS and iPadOS, I’d say NewsTap is the way to go.
