The hypothetical for me was if you'd offered Root these "overheads" (as they say) - green tinge on the pitch, overcast, 21c dewpoint (i.e. very humid - the sort of humidity you might get once in 10 years in London, say) whether he'd have bowled. Playing history over the conditions?

I think batting first was correct, and England's position has nothing to do with the conditions.

Broad as well doesn't seem like the best of decisions. And that's not
just the benefit of hindsight, as I thought it when the side was

save the game. Sadly, without Cook, Strauss and Trott at the top of the
order, I can't see that happening. (Of the current XI, probably only
Root and Stokes would get into that 2010-11 side.)

Robinson would probably come in for Finn, but at the expense of reducing
the variety in the attack. I suppose you could also make a case for Wood

Yes, you may be right if Collingwood was ahead of Bell in the pecking
order going into the series, which their positions in the batting order
suggest he was.

I'd be struggling. Finn went into the series with 32 wickets @ 23, even
if they were against Bangladesh and a shambles of a Pakistan batting
line-up.
