My neighbour's file alarm was beeping so I went round to check all was OK.
A second neighbour was there before me prising the alarm off the ceiling.
She couldn't manage it so I climbed the steps and prised it out of its
holder.

Didn't make any difference, it was the upstairs one going off.

I have never seen one that needs to be prised out. Most have a hinged
cover, though it is often not obvious when you look at them.

Apparently the Fire Brigade fitted them just over 10 years ago - and they
have a ten year life! Totally sealed units, rip them down, break a seal to
disconnect them and chuck them when they play up. I replaced mine with a
couple from Amazon, just take the battery out if there's a problem.

I have a carbon monoxide alarm like that. It is expected to last at
least 7 years, and the case shows "Battery not replaceable" on the back.

The 7 years takes me to 2025, so I don't feel inclined to take it apart
to see if the batteries could be replaced.

I have a couple of CO alarms that use 3 x AA Duracell batteries. They
beep about once per minute when the batteries are getting low so you
just fit new batteries. The batteries seem to last for at least 3
years. The sensors have working lives in excess of 10 years. There
is a different warning signal for the sensor and if that goes off you
need to change the complete device. They also have digital LED displays
which indicate any CO about and shows the concentration of CO in ppm. So
a daily glance will usually tell you if a CO problem is forming with
your gas heating system.
