I was reading that Stokes first four deliveries were all no balls.
It's poor from the bowler regardless of how rusty he might be, and
it's piss poor by the 3rd umpire who was supposed to be watching for
them.

Apparently there has been some technical issue which prevented him from
doing that in a sufficiently timely fashion. Apparently the on-field
umpires were aware of that, and that they should have been doing their
own checking, so it wasn't brilliant by the umpire at Stokes' end. Since
snicko has also not been working, it all seems to have been a bit of a
shambles.

Ah, I see, or rather I don't because I haven't got BT sport. If some
kit wasn't working the umpires, captains, scorers and probably
broadcasters and grounds staff too would have discussed this at their
pre match conflab.Looks like someone forgot.

They're blaming covid restrictions(?) for equipment not being available. That seems... farfetched. I wonder if it was more to do with overseas technicians not being able to enter due to covid restrictions or something along those lines.

As a DRS fan I must admit it gladdens me to hear someone say the game is in a "shambles" when DRS elements are unavailable.

I also read that in Stokes' first 5 overs there were 14 un-called front foot no-balls. Impressively bad by Stokes.

It does. There haven't been such problems in England, in India for the
IPL or in the UAE for the T20 World Cup.

The story I've heard on RTS is that with the covid restrictions they couldn't get a technician in quickly and because it was unavailable for a significant time it's not being used through the match for consistancy.

on field umpires have stuggled to pick up noballs for a while.
I suspect that part of the issue is the modern delivery action which normally starts more front on and it looks like the back leg interferes with getting a good view of the front leg.
Considering the amount of time you've got to look up and have a good view for anything happening down at the batsman's end it's a tough job

That would agree with what I've just read on the BBC website: "...has
not had 'Snicko' in operation because local Covid restrictions do not
allow for an engineer to enter the state of Queensland in time to fix
it."

be accounted a misfortune; to miss fourteen looks like carelessness."

I see that a power cut meant that TV and radio coverage, along with the
DRS, was missing for thirty minutes today. It's beginning to look as
though Australia are as good at technology as England are at cricket. :)

Yes, they were lacking a backup generator, apparently. Fortunately (and
miraculously given what happened in the rest of the session) no wickets
fell during that period, and DRS wasn't needed AFAIAA. BT Sport managed
to cover most of the outage using a single camera on the boundary at
third man/mid on, which was quite amusing. Alastair Cook described it as
like when his dad used to film him batting with a camcorder when he was
a kid.

So it was just a money saving issue. This staff could have worked if they'd flown in via Sydney and done 2 weeks Hotel Quarantine in Brisbane.
HQ cost is around AUD$3500 each (plus they'd of course have to be paid their wages, but that time could have been used for training etc).

With a billion exemptions, including for (some) professional sports (including staff). There was also an exemption for "specialist or essential workers".
Both of these would were very much doable, but had pretty high costs.
