Jewellers rouge cerium oxide) used to be the go for buffing out
scratches in glass. But - the glass in car screens is tempered glass.
That makes it difficult to do on windscreens, or so I'm told. Never used
the jewellers rouge on a windscreen so can't say if it is more difficult
or not. Anyway, you have a start on what can be used. Google it.

Most, if not all, modern car windsreens are laminated which isn't the
same as tempered glass. Tempered glass (safety glass) is the stuff
that breaks into small pieces instead of shattering into shards.

Jewellers rouge (ferric oxide) and cerium oxide aren't the same thing
(the latter is the norm for polishing glass) but I certainly wouldn't
be using either on a windsceen. Toothpaste is an age old remedy for
poshing out fine scratches scratches however it needs to be the right
type of toothpaste. Google would probably find the details.

Toothpaste. The cheap stuff that feels a bit gritty (for want of a
better description) is the one to use.

Windscreen glass is laminated so you're not actually polishing glass
though those products may work.

Try toothpaste as mentioned in my other post would be my suggestion.

What about the plastic headlight shields, plastic window rain guards
and tail-light covers etc. Toyota no longer stock replacements for
these. Can these be resurrected with some paste? They're going
milky too.

You can use the same stuff on those that you use on headlights. I use a
Turtle brand headlight cleaner for mine. A bottle goes a very long way

Those are usually made of poly-carbonate and there are lots of products
on the market specifically made to polish and clean them, most auto
parts shops stock it.

I've tried that on glass. Didn't work well enough.

Yeah, I used it on DVD's and resurrected a couple. But they are
polycarbonate, much softer than glass.

Gawd *look* at these clueless cunts in action, will you? "Licenced
Mechanics" allegedly, and between them they can't work out something as
basic as a laminated windscreen :)

Just to clue you in fella's, laminated glass is two pieces of glass
bonded together with a thin layer of plastic film in between them. The
laminate isn't "on" the windscreen, it's in the middle of the windscreen
between the two sheets of glass and isn't accessible.

Fucking hell. Even my mother knows that :)

As for polishing scratches, automotive glass is hard but it's not
"toughened". As John_H pointed out the other day, "toughened" glass is
the old style windscreen material that shatters into a million small
pieces when it breaks and laminated screens don't use that. Automotive
glass is made to a particular standard that is somewhat harder than
domestic household glass, and only the very finest of barely visible
scratches would ever have a hope of being removed by hand.

Generally, if you can see it clearly it's not coming out without a
dedicated glass polishing buff.

The laminate refers to two bits of glass stuck together with a plastic
substance the surface is still glass and can be polished with cerium
oxide (so could the laminating substance for that matter if it were
possible to get at it :) )

So did I, but it looked like it was also on the outside.

The glass on my

I just had another look, this time properly and you are right. The outer
layer is thin glass which makes sense.

Good thing I never claimed to be a glazier ;-)

Yes I know laminate is sandwiched by definition between the panes but
when I looked at my broken windscreen at a casual glance noted what
looked to be laminate on the outside as well. I've had a proper look and
that's not the case, the very thin outer glass has come away from the
laminating material.

I was wrong, IOW.

the surface is still glass and can be polished with cerium

Yep.
