Saw this widebeam boat advertised online for £49,995. Disabled access.
Thought I might have that. Something to spend Mum's legacy on that all
the family can share.

Contacted the seller. It's on the Norfolk Broads. Stated negotiating a
few extras and transport to York Marina. Asked him for a ballpark
estimate of total cost delivered. It is five times the initial price!
When I questioned it, he said the original ad was a mistake.

It has now disappeared.

Lucky I hadn't paid a deposit!

Yes if something looks too good to be true it often is.

I remember some years ago a person wanted to buy a pedello, as often used to
be seen around the coast. These are still about but normally only on lakes,
these days.

Turns out that he wanted to use it on the Thames, the tidal bit near where I
live and they are not allowed as they are not powerful enough to get out of
the currents when the tide is flowing.
Good job he never bought it, but I can recall when younger you could take
out a rowing boat and this was almost impossible to control and I went
around in circles due to the tidal flow and ended up on the other side many
yards from where I wanted to go.
Boats always were a bit of a black art, even though I used to build model
ones that were radio controlled in my youth. I had the fastest electric boat
around. Mainly due to it housing a lead acid battery and a very powerful
Mitsubishi motor with Cobalt magnets.

I've handled boats all my life Brian, sailing on the Norfolk Broads as a
young teenager, then joining the RN at age 15. Being involved in canal
restoration, then living aboard a narrowboat, and running trip boats on
the Basingstoke Canal, a canal I had helped to restore.

I'm not fit enough now to handle any kind of boat alone. And I do miss
it. But it is surprising how many healthy volunteer crew members there
are when it comes to going anywhere.

I'm torn between spending the dosh I haven't got yet on a boat for the
family, or an articulated camper for me. Won't be able to afford both!

The camper is probably the safer bet.

How well insulated are campers these days. I recall our little Commer back
in the 60s was very cold and running with condensation in the winter.

The power hook-up on sites is the answer to that one. A small electric
fan heater is very effective. Also modern vans are very well insulated.
The caravan I have now is over 40 years old, and there is only one small
repaired patch where there was slight damp due to seam leakage on the
front. But it also has gas heating. I've never ben cold in the winter in
the van, or on a boat, when I had it.
