David Sutherland, who created and drew the Bash Street Kids, has put his
pen down for the last time.

Not a bad run, he was 89.

It was wasted on kids. One strip had Cutbert Cringeworthy remarking his
homework essay made "War and Peace" look like a note to the milkman.
There were loads of gems like that.

That was and is part of the beauty of it. After the kids had read it,
the parents could read it and get a whole new set of jokes.

Basically, like any other good kids humour. There are bits in Disney and
Pixar kids movies that I'm surprised got through the censoring process.

I used to use Constanseau's French-English English-French dictionary
when I were an apprentice and it was useful in that it quoted the
looked-up word in a context. I'd cull whole phrases and sentences and
use them in my French essays. On one occasion the teacher wrote at the
bottom: I prithee tell me where thou obtainest the archaic phrases!

Fair's fair, it wasn't much more than 50 years out of date, the book
being pulished IIRC in 1899, and I writ them essays mid-1950s innit

Note to self: Ask milkman if she's read War and Peace.

SWMBO is addicted to Quiz programmes (Chase, Tipping Point... and so on,
but not Mastermind, University Challenge, Only Connect). In one Quiz
programme I heard a contestant answer that "War and Peace" was about
World War 2.

Perhaps it is.

I used attend pub quizzes, and found that it was helpful(!) to question
the answers. Finally the quizmasters started stating at the start that
the definitive answer could not be questioned.

At one quiz we were disallowed for something and retreated to the bar,
until someone came out to tell us that my answer was correct and we had
won the quiz. We had to remain in the pub until one sobered up enough to
drive us home.
