crossed the road in front of a police van, the cop in the front seat was
cradling a product of messers Heckler and Koch across his lap, white
BMWs with blue lights were screaming around the place with sirens on. I

Doesn't sound like a great time to be in London unless you like crazy
crowds.
You don't have to try too hard in London to find heavily armed cops,
walk past either end of 10 Downing Street or visit the crown jewels at
the tower, cops in body armor carrying machines guns who don't look very
friendly.

The queue to file past the coffin was 5 miles long, 18-24 hour wait. A
friend was part of an organisation handing out water and sangers to
people in the queue said that people turned up just wearing t-shirts and
with no supplies, and it was bloody cold.

We found the local cops to be quite friendly and helpful, more like PR
and a crime deterrent but as you say the more serious cops aren't far away.

*Taking up citizenship* of that fair country was an *option* for me, and

Aussie, my father I'm not so sure, nor am I sure of any dates. There is
another option but I need to apply and for it to be *granted*. Had I
known I had the option in my 20s, I would definitely have taken it up
since I was heading for Europe when I was in my mid twenties and Dutch
citizenship would have been *very handy*. At my current age, I don't
think I will bother. I didn't get to Europe anyway because my ultimate
destination, the Middle East, was in a bit of turmoil. We were intending
to do the overland trek to Europe via SE & E Asia, Vladivostok and the
Trans Siberian Express. I was talking to a helicopter pilot in Bkk,
Thailand who had just fled Iran - with the helicopter and all his mates
- he told me the Middle East was going to be in turmoil for months,
don't bother going there. He was right, it lasted another 8 months or
more. That pause in Thailand scuppered all those plans I'd made, went
for a haircut and got clipped! 43 years later and I can't even grow much
hair! ;-)

Oh, and they don't allow *dual-nationality* so it's not really an option
for me as I never intend to lose my Aussie citizenship - ever. My wife
would be even less keen on losing her *current* dual-nationality just to
follow me and become *only* Dutch. Yeah, nah!

So, yeah, colour me a true blue Aussie! ;-)
