I've just got a quote from a 'mycar' mechanic for the following. It is
for parts and labour:

REMOVE AND REPLACE REAR SHOCKS 1240.00
REMOVE AND REPLACE FRONT CONTROL ARMS 790.00

Are these reasonable prices? The guys said it is just normal wear and
tare. The car is a 2001 Civic.

Pedders have quoted me $780 total cost for the shocks (parts and labour).

I told the MyCar shop about the Pedders quote and MyCar have said they
will 'juggle things around' to match the Pedders quote, so I have left
the car with MyCar.

Mycar are a rort worse than any dealer. Always get a second opinion and
multiple quotes.

I wouldn't give them my business if I were you. They tried to sting you FFS.

People assume a lot of things based on the words from people with a
vested interest in keeping people away from dealers. You should *always*
check.

For instance, there have been quite a few times where I have sourced
genuine parts *cheaper* from dealers than anything non-genuine available
online or from any other place.

Just recently I bought a genuine blower resistor for $38 (at trade) when
the cheapest I could get it anywhere else from other suppliers (at trade
where applicable) or online including ebay was $78.

Which means I can supply it to the customer for much less.
You also have to consider what parts are used. For instance some people
are getting VE timing chains done but the parts used are cheap kits from
China and they can fail again within 50,000km. The labor cost is a
significant component of the job so it makes no sense to use junk
components. Genuine kits and quality non-genuine kits correctly
installed are good for 170,000km+ which would likely see out the life of
the vehicle - but they come at a greater cost.

All these things should be taken into consideration and these questions
should be asked - and don't listen to advice from junk mechanics either
- like you know who in here ;-)

Update: I got all the work done at mycar with the price on the shocks
reduced to match the other quote.

But now my car radio doesn't work. The LCD display works and I can
"change" channels etc., but no sound comes out.

What could they have done to the car to make this happen? I don't get
how a service and work on the suspension could break the radio?

Should I take the car back and demand that they fix it free of charge?

You should certainly speak to them. Maybe forgot to reconnect something
if they had the battery disconnected for instance.

I took the car back to MyCar, and they said the radio works, but the
speakers don't and they said to go to a "car radio" place.

How should I get the speakers fixed or replaced? (it is a 2001 Honda Civic)

I just dropped it off at a car audio place. Someone on Whirlpool said
not to take it to a dealer.

I just dropped the car off at a car audio place.

He's called back and said the rear speakers are broken, probably because
of what someone did when they they did the work done on the rear shocks.

I'm not sure whether to go back to MyCar and demand they pay the $250
the car audio guy is charging me to replace the rear speakers.

I think the lesson for me is not get any actual work done at MyCar,
apart from a service and rego inspection. If they identify work to get
done, then take it to somewhere like Pedders.

Get photos of the damage to the speakers and why they might have been
broken during the job and present the evidence to Mycar. They might
admit that what they did caused the damage but will then claim that it's
due to the age of the vehicle and speakers. They might compensate you in
some way but they won't pay for new speakers. I did say not to give them
your business.

Some people need *hands on experience* in order to learn, you know, from
their *mistakes*. It's usually those operating in the concrete mental
stage - like Darren - but obviously not limited to him.

their inflated quote should have been a warning to you not to go there
