The Government must withhold cash support for the English and Wales Cricket Board until the game stamps out racism, MPs have ruled following the Azeem Rafiq furore.

Rafiq - who gave a bombshell testimony to the same parliamentary group last year - welcomed recommendations as cricket faced the prospect of being put in special measures.

The ECB, Yorkshire and a host of other county clubs embroiled in ongoing discrimination probes were warned money could be withheld unless the game can “clean up its act”.

A report by the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) select committee singled out “deep-seated” racism and criticised previous attempts to “discredit” Rafiq.

Julian Knight, the committee chair, and other cross-party members warned of a “long and difficult road” ahead as they urged Government to go through with prior threats of financial curbs. “We are watching closely and fully intend to ensure that cricket cleans up its act,” the report says. “We recommend that the Government ensures that any future public funds for cricket are dependent on continuous, demonstrable progress in getting rid of racism in both the dressing rooms and in the stands.”
