It won't stop people like the moron posting irrelevant twaddle on
Usenet. (He's going to have lots more to post about, since the ECB
have to keep reporting to Parliament now on how their anti-racism
programmes are doing on a regular basis, so he will no doubt have
massive complaints.) It's a pretty fair guarantee that the dressing
room culture will be low on the racist banter, though.

When was the last time YCCC hired a non-white head coach?

If it's "somewhere around the Renaissance" then it makes me wonder if this appointment is actually yet another racist action by YCCC ie choosing Ottis for publicity reasons because he's black

exactly...board members are the ones responsible for setting the standards that CEO's or coach/mangers in this case have to follow. They have failed badly in the past so unless they are new board members they should go

Actually, I made a mistake. Lord Patel was somehow installed as
Chairman and basically appointed the new board; I'm not sure if
they've appointed a CEO. The new board (one of whom survives from the
previous board because he represents the club's principal creditor and
can't be voted off) did appoint a director of cricket - Darren Gough -
and now they and he have appointed Gibson. Ryan Sidebottom's also on
the new coaching team.

Patel isn't a wonderful character. There are those who say he is as
utterly sure of being right about everything as to offer a certain
amount of competition for the local racist moron - although the fact
that he quite often is right rather than always wrong is quite a
difference. The sooner he can convince himself his work is done and
step down with the grateful thanks of quite a few for turning things
round, the better, I suspect.

Since it's an entirely new management - about the only people who've
survived from the previous regime are in the accounts and finance
departments - it's rather unfair to call it "another" racist action
when it's a completely different set of people taking it.

I'm pretty certain that YCCC are not the only county never to have had
a non-white head coach. Counties aren't spending their time scouring
the world for head coaches: I'd guess that in any given season, the
majority of head coaches are former county players (not necessarily
the one they're coaching now) and only a few from abroad, and there
are far more Australians and Saffers putting themselves about than
from other places.

As of now, there are very few non-white former county players who have
gone into coaching and reached a serious level, but then the
proportion of all players who go into coaching isn't that high, and
since there aren't that many non-white former county players, their
rarity in backrooms is probably a reflection of the composition of the
available talent pool. I don't know if any have yet made it to head
coach, but it won't now be remarkable if they do.

No, I'm not saying that English cricket is entirely free of racism
because that's obvious bollocks. But the people who follow the moron's
gospel are dying off and retiring and people who know a good
finger-spinner when they see one are gradually replacing them.

I don't doubt that his colour was an advantage for obvious optics
reasons, but his coaching record is such that landing him is quite a
prize. I'd expect a higher level of performance from the team than
under Andrew Gale even if no other changes had been made.

Which means that he coached YCCC's new bowling coach Sidebottom.
Sidebottom was more successful for England with Gibson as coach than
on his sole previous appearance, and probably more successful than
most people would have expected. So it's not unlikely that Sidebottom
already has some faith in his new boss.

Vikram Solanki has been head coach at Surrey for the last couple of
years, but is leaving to take up an appointment with the new Ahmedabad
IPL franchise.

I'm sure his being black didn't hurt, but he also seems to be a pretty
good coach. At least the boards of England, WI, SA and Bangladesh, all
of whom have hired him to coach their national sides at one time or
another, all seem to think so.
