At least its not just England who are shite away on tour, with
the safys blown away by Henry, who had a superstellar season
in the CC with Kent a while back, but only had a test bowling av of
about 50 b4 this match.

I imagine he was only playing because Boult was either unfit or rested.
With Southee, Boult, Jamieson, Wagner and Henry, NZ have an enviable
pack of pace bowlers to choose from.

The last-wicket partnership was one short of SA's total. Henry's having
the match of his life.

He would be the first to do it batting at #11.

ISTR that Alan Davidson did it in the Tied Test. I imagine Sobers and
Miller must have done it a few times. Botham, Imran and Kapil Dev are
other likely suspects. I'd guess that in total it's probably been done
about twenty times. I'd wondered if Larwood might have taken 10 wickets
in the 1932-3 Test when he scored 98 as nightwatchman, but it turns out
he only took 5 wickets in that match. He came closer four years earlier,
when he scored 70 and took 8 wickets in the match.

Yep. And yet if Boult comes back for the next Test, I imagine he's still
the most likely omission.

Interesting that it was very rare prior to 1973, with only 4 instances,
since when it's become increasingly common.

.... even taking into account the considerable increase in the frequency
of Tests.

Before the 1973 instance, there were 724 Tests, so one instance every
181 Tests.
From then on, there have been 1726 Tests, so one instance every 66 Tests.

Less surprising is that there were 9 instances in the 1980s (one every
30 Tests), 6 of them by the 4 players you would expect.

Thanks for that analysis. In the end, Henry fell one wicket short.

I wonder if some of it's down to there being less rabbits amongst bowlers?

Sobers' best match figures were 8/80, but he did make 174 in his only
innings in that match (Headingley 1966).

Miller only took 10 wickets once: Lord's 1956, when he made 28 and 30.
His nearest miss was at Brisbane in 1946/47, when he made 79 and took
7/60 in the first innings and 2 of the first 3 wickets in the follow-on,
but he only got another 4.1 overs after that, and didn't manage to take
his 10th.

I would love to see Australia tour NZ right now .... its strange that they are still playing Test Cricket in NZ
yet Australia stopped playing them over 5 weeks ago. Christ, you could play Test Cricket all the way to end of
March here in Oz
