I think that was the last game Gary ever played as Fergy didnt like it in
case of injury. Phil also opened with hayden for the same lancashire
league team. Apparently he was even batter than his brother. So thats
why we dont have any good batters now. They all go into football instead.

In GAA everyone is amature, some players go to Australia and get paid
to play Aussie rules football and some go to rugby.
The Irish lotto was at 19 million. I can't remember exactly but I
think the week the jackpot had to be capped (gov intervention or
something) it was won.
The winning ticket was sold in Mayo (Castlebar?) and just as the news
of the ticket broke, the news that the Mayo star player Osine
Mullan(sp?) declined a tidy paying contract in Australia playing
Aussie rules and decided to stay and play GAA for free. I'm sure you
can imagine what most of the country imagined, but he didn't win ;-)

One problem is that nowadays, even for non-international footballers,
the season seems to last for about 10-11 months, once pre-season
training is taken into account, rather than the 8-9 months that it used
to, making combining both games at League and county level pretty much
impossible.

One of the last to play both games at a high level was Jim Standen, who
in the 1960s won the FA Cup and the European Cup Winners' Cup with West
Ham, and the County Championship with Worcestershire. Since then, Ian
Botham and, IIRC, Chris Balderstone and Phil Neale have played both
games, but the football was with Scunthorpe United, Carlisle United and
Lincoln City respectively, which isn't quite the same as playing in the
old First Division (or the Premier League nowadays).
