Afreen Sheikh says she is being forced to choose between her education and her religion.

When the 19-year-old Muslim arrived at college recently, a hostile Hindu mob hurled stones and abuse at her for defying a ban by wearing a hijab to school.

What hurt the most, she said, was that her classmates were among the crowd.

“I was terrified" she told The Telegraph. “I still can’t believe our Hindu classmates had come prepared to throw us out of the college. I thought they will kill us."

Ms Sheikh, a biology student, is one of a number of young Indians now caught up in a sectarian row sparked by India's Hindu majority government classroom hijab ban.

The ruling in the south-west state Karnataka has raised tensions with India's Muslim minority, who make up about 13 per cent of the country's 1.35 billion people. Protests against the ban by Muslim students earlier this month attracted counter demonstrations by Hindus, many of them sporting saffron shawls, a holy colour in Hinduism.

When the ban came into place, Ms Sheikh and six of her college friends agreed that they would remove their black burqa cloaks. However, they drew the line at also removing their hijab headscarves as well.

The row has already triggered nationwide protests, with critics branding the ban “unconstitutional and Islamophobic.” Opponents of the ban have complained that while officials have declared that the hijab is a religious garment that should not be worn in class, no similar order was made regarding Hindu students’ saffron robes.

Other Indian states are now also threatening to introduce their own bans.

Malala Yousafzai is among those to have voiced criticism of the rule and the US government has also waded in.
“Religious freedom includes the ability to choose one’s religious attire,” tweeted Rashad Hussain, the State Department’s ambassador for religious freedom.
“Hijab bans in schools violate religious freedom and stigmatise and marginalise women and girls.”

Tensions rapidly escalated on Sunday night when a right-wing Hindu activist was murdered, triggering violent protests.

Harsha, 23, a member of Bajrang Dal, a right-wing Hindu group, was stabbed to death in the Shimoga district of Karnataka.

His death provoked outrage from right-wing Hindu activists who targeted Muslim areas, pelting stones at houses and setting cars on fire.

Authorities have imposed curbs on public gatherings and ordered the closure of schools and colleges.

Karnataka, which is home to India’s IT hub of Bangalore, is a major stronghold of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). With several important state assembly elections looming this year, BJP officials have so far been unrepentant.

“We are only insisting on the uniform code in the college. Girls are allowed to enter inside the campus with hijab but inside classroom they will have to remove it,” said BJP leader Raghupathi Bhat, who heads the committee entrusted to impose the ban.

The counter-demonstrations by Hindus, he said, were not intended as a provocation but merely a response to Muslim girls flouting the rules.

The son of one of Pakistan's wealthiest families has been sentenced to death for beheading a former diplomat’s daughter in a high society murder which shocked Pakistan

The killing of Noor Mukadam sickened the country of 220 million in July last year and underlined the widespread violence facing women in Pakistan, campaigners said.

Ms Mukadam had tried several times to escape from Zahir Jaffer while held at his large Islamabad home for up to two days, but was prevented from leaving by household staff.

Two domestic employees were sentenced to 10 years each for abetting her murder. Jaffer's parents, Zakir Jaffer and Asmat Adamjee, were found not guilty of trying to cover up his crime.

A four-month-long trial heard that Ms Mukadam had been lured to Jaffer's home in a prosperous Islamabad neighbourhood and detained after the 30-year-old American dual national refused to accept the rejection of his marriage proposal.

At one point she was desperate enough to leap from a first-floor window to try to get away. But her escape was thwarted when Jaffer ordered staff to capture her before he killed her. A video that surfaced on social media at the time showed Jaffer dragging her back to his home. The court heard she was tortured with a knuckle duster.
