It is utterly dismaying that no one from the media or professional

When, in November last year, Michael Vaughan found himself in the eye of the storm over racism in English cricket, it was, he says, as if his world had fallen in.

Accused of making racist comments to his fellow Yorkshire cricketer Azeem Rafiq – which Vaughan has always strongly denied – and on a series of Twitter posts, Vaughan switched off his social media and tried to blank out the white noise of criticism and attacks.

“You know it’s serious,” he says, “‘when you have cameras outside your house for a week. I’ll be honest; it was the worst time of my life for me and my family – it was awful. But nothing quite like, I guess, what had gone on at Yorkshire Cricket Club for certain individuals over the years.”

Rafiq had alleged that in 2009, Vaughan, referring to him and three other Asian cricketers, had said: “There’s too many of you lot – it’s something we need to have a word about”. The allegation would be one of a number from Rafiq that would shake the foundations of Yorkshire cricket.

Many in Vaughan’s position, when confronted with the allegation, might have retreated in a spirit of wounded grievance. But finding himself on the back foot – an unusual position for an aggressive batsman who scored more than 5,700 runs in Test cricket – Vaughan took a more proactive step.

For the past three months, he has been engaged in a diversity and inclusion course, interrogating his own attitudes to race, gender and disability, addressing such questions as unconscious bias, equity and white privilege.
