All cricket fans, especially the older generation will know the West Indian cricket team had in their ranks a break match-winning bowler by the name of Sonny Ramadhin - a right-arm leg-spinner. Born in Trinidad of Indian descent, he became the first West Indian bowler to exceed capturing 150 Test wickets. He tormented the world's leading batsmen in the 1950s with his confounding deliveries, becoming a hero in the cricket-mad West Indies.

He was the first East Indian to play for the West Indian to win. He was born in Trinidad on May 1st 1931.

But he has admitted that he cheated for 30 years. His statement is recorded in a newspaper report datelined London, March 2 in the 'Hindu' newspaper of 1999. While bowling Ramadhin's shoulder and arm are involved in an unusually quick movement in the act of delivery, which makes any infringement, if there is one, difficult to detect.

Difficult to spot
"It's about time I got it off my conscience," Ramadhin has said. Ramadhin concealed the throwing action as best he could by keeping his shirt sleeve buttoned at the wrist.

That meant that any bending of the elbow, which is against the rules and turns the delivery into a throw, would be difficult to spot.

"Nowadays, television cameras would have picked it up immediately. But I got away with it in every grade of cricket for 30 years," he has said.

Ramadhin, who at 5 feet 4 inches height, was a short man, even by cricketing standards. "There was no way somebody of my build could have produced my faster ball without throwing it".

So he didn’t throw his legbreak, he threw his faster ball. That makes more sense and yes a faster ball is normally the one that is thrown from a spinner (definitely have seen a fair share of them in the Surrey Champ - including one of bowlers that I play with at the moment)

According to his Cricinfo profile, "He bowled right-arm offbreaks and legbreaks with no discernible change of action." That seems to suggest a doosra rather than a conventional leg break.

can alter the angle of the seam so it's scrambled. I'm pretty sure the
bowler has minimum control of which way the ball will turn
Using the traditional offspin grip it's almost impossible not to throw
the doorsa.

I suspect that Ramadhin was the first doosra bowler. In more recent
times, Saqlain Mushtaq re- invented it, but I don't recall him ever
being accused of chucking.

my recollection of Saqlain's is that it wasn't far off a conventional arm ball as opposed to, say, Muralitharan's

I was actually picking him for the contrast in how much the ball turned rather than commenting on his action

As I recall them Saqlain's went just off straight, Muralitharan's was a huge spinner, maybe not quite up there with a big Warne leggie or a Mushtaq googly but not far off.
If I'm right on that recollection I think it's plausible that Saqlain didn't chuck the doosra while most people do because I don't think he was pushing for a lot of spin on it while most people are.

As far as Muralitharan goes my recollection is that he did lab tests on the doosra and they found the elbow straightened more than was allowed for a spinner under the ICC regulations at the time and they upped the allowed degree of straightening for spinners after that
