I used to think I didn't like parsnips until Christmas dinner came with
roast parsnips one year, and I discovered that they were delicious,

He does, and Stokes, Foakes and Woakes were also laudable. (Apparently
this is the first time that all three have appeared in the same England
side.) Admittedly conditions had eased a little by the time they came
in, but I don't think they were ever tricky enough to account for having
been 48-4.

I though that Foakes' straight drive off the back foot early in his
innings, that went back past the bowler like a tracer bullet, was the
shot of the day.

Never mind Stokes, it's the first time that Foakes and Woakes have done
so - mainly because Woakes has played very few away matches since Foakes
made his debut, while Foakes has yet to play at home, except for his
sole T20 in 2019.

Talking of names, there seems to be a glut of Braithwaites. Kraigg
Braithwaite is captaining the WI, Gregory Braithwaite is one of the
umpires (and seems to have got most of his decisions right), and Carlos
Braithwaite is a pundit in the BT Sport studio.

So they do. Somehow I'd never noticed. I suppose it's like "Paris in the
the spring", and you see what you expect to see. Perhaps the spelling is
a West Indian variant, as I think British Braithwaites mostly have the
"i" - or have I been getting that wrong all these years too?

No, you're right. Looking at those listed on CricketArchive, the
Brathwaites are largely West Indian, especially Barbadian, whereas the
Braithwaites are mostly English.

I am not surprised to find that there was a family of plantation owners
named Brathwaite in Barbados.

A vague memory has now come back to me of my making exactly the same
mistake with Kraigg Brathwaite's name five years ago when, with Shai
Hope, he helped WI to that remarkable win at Headingley, and your
correcting me then, which is rather embarrassing.

Anyway, you get a gold star for spelling Kraigg the way he spells it,
because I bet nobody would guess that spelling if they just heard it.

Braitthwaite will have been the name of a slave owner on Barbados. Freed slaves frequent took their ex owners' surname. RH
