Have England ever drawn a match in the last over or very close to
before?
Or is Carlos just being a bit precious, journalist and all that?

I'm sure they have a number of times, but I doubt whether they've ever
gone as far as the last over before when needing as many as 6 wickets. I
suppose they could even have gone on for another ball or two, to allow
for the possibility of stumpings off wides or run outs off no balls!

>Or is Carlos just being a bit precious, journalist and all that?

I was surprised that Root went on for quite so long, considering how
knackered his bowlers were and with another Test coming up in a few
days. Had I been captain, on that pitch I'd have given up with 8 or so
overs left. Who knows whether he'd have done the same against India? He
was certainly within his rights to go on that long, if he thought there
was still a chance of victory. . I'd be more interested in Kraigg
Brathwaite's opinion than Carlos's.

They did the same thing in the 2019 Lord's Ashes Test, and at Rajkot in
2016/17. OK, Aus and India were 6 wickets down in those cases, but I
think those instances suggest that the answer to Carlos's question is
"yes, they would".
