I stumbled across the 4th Test between WI and Eng in Kingston in 1929/30.

Originally, I was looking for the record highest scores at the fall of each wicket. England holds the record for the 8th, 9th and 10th wicket, all in that Test (813, 821 and 849, for those interested).

But the scorecard is something special. It was the Test where Andy Sandham scored his 325, plus there are the eye-watering bowling figures of the West Indian Tommy Scott: 80.2 - 13 - 266 - 5.

It's the most expensive 5-wicket haul (or more) in Test history.

The game was a timeless Test, ending in a draw after days 8 and 9 were washed out and England had to return home.

Scorecard here:

Only because the two teams who passed those scores failed to lose those
wickets. ;)

Well, somebody has to have the record...

I was reminiscing about England's 503/1d v Aus in 2010/11 and wondering if that was the highest score before the fall of the second wicket. I believe it to be the 6th highest score. The highest score at the fall of the second wicket is 615, from that SL v IND match in 1997.

"Tip" Foster's record Test score of 287 (in his first Test innings) in the first Test of of the 1903/5 Ashes series. Foster was also one of the best centre forwards of his day and played for England at football.

325 was the highers Test score for only a few months before Bradman scored 334 v England.,

Sandham, was 39 at the time and when the young Les Ames came in and started dashing off ones and twos Sandham had to ask him to slow down.

Sandham was of course the regular opening partner for Jack Hobbs at county level with Surrey RH .

plus there are the eye-watering bowling figures of the West Indian Tommy Scott: 80.2 - 13 - 266 - 5.

If you check the ages of the England side in that series I suspect you will find it has the oldest average age for an England touring side. Rhodes was 52 and there were a few other players past 40. RH

He did well in the 2nd innings, making his match figures
9 for 374. I expect David can tell us how that ranks among 9+
wicket hauls?

> The game was a timeless Test, ending in a draw after days 8 and 9

There's clearly a generic problem with timeless Tests. I
expect David can also tell us which is the longest-lasting Test
with a decisive result; otherwise, it seems that if you get to
day 8 or so, the result is bound to be a draw, which is a bit daft
for an open-ended match. Bit like the first Karpov-Kasparov match,
except that it's harder to move a Test from a proper ground to less
well-prepared grounds than it was to move the K-K match from a
grand venue in Moscow to a club room somewhere in the suburbs.

I noted that the CI scorecard that you referred us to had
also the well-known picture of the Oval scoreboard with England's
903-7 posted thereon, and beneath the scoreboard a four-ton roller
inscribed "BOSSER'S PET" with groundsman "Bosser" Martin fondly
posing next to it.

It was 517/1d, and is the 5th-highest.

As it is the most runs conceded in a match, it ranks last.

The 5th Ashes Test at Melbourne in 1928/29, which finished at 2:43 pm on
day 8.

http://www.sportstats.com.au/zArchive/1920s/1928AE/1928AE5bbb1.pdf

That was the 2nd-longest match in terms of balls bowled; the Kingston
match was only the 6th-longest by that measure.

As Robbert says, there was no play on days 8 and 9 at Kingston. WI were
nowhere near winning, but day 7 ended with the loss of their 5th wicket,
and apart from Passailaigue, who was 2* in his only Test, the remaining
batting doesn't look all that strong (although they weren't rabbits
either), so it might not have taken a great deal of play on either of
those two days to complete the match.

Similarly, in the 1938/39 Durban Test, England finished only 42 runs
short of victory with 5 wickets remaining. Day 8 was washed out, and
rain ended play about an hour early on day 3, and at tea on the last day
(day 10) after two short interruptions before tea. Another hour of play
somewhere along the line would probably have been enough.

Thanks, David. Brilliant as ever.

[ObNit: your first link was to a different record.]

Oops. I obviously forgot to copy the URL, and pasted the one from my
previous post again. This is the correct one:
