Lord Patel on Thursday night secured a landslide mandate from Yorkshire members to ratify his proposed club changes which will ensure England matches at Headingley this summer.

Supporters inside the crunch extraordinary general meeting hailed a “watershed moment for English cricket” as the chairman finally overcame a series of efforts to derail his reforms.

Sources inside the room said Patel secured an eight-to-one margin of victory in the vote, with opposition led by predecessors including former chairman Robin Smith “just collapsing”.

Patel’s plan to resolve the issue was to ask members to vote at the EGM for up to eight non-members to join Yorkshire’s board as independent non-executive directors. The only major dissenting questions at the meeting were said to be over “why aren’t the press allowed in” and “what are consequences for the sackings” of 16 members of staff in the wake of the Rafiq furore. Lawyers were said to have replied that the dismissals remained a confidential issue. ...............................

Smith, the former chairman leading the revolt against those reforms, had previously said he could not bring himself to vote for Patel’s changes, even if it meant Yorkshire going bust. “There comes a time when you have to say principle must prevail,” said Smith, who questioned the legitimacy of the “very unjust” ECB ban.

Smith claimed 15 of Yorkshire’s other 27 vice-presidents and honorary life members were planning to oppose the reforms but he had expected them to be outvoted because of the “threat that Test matches will be taken away”.

The EGM had already been twice postponed over procedural flaws identified by Smith, who also declared there to be fundamental defects in Yorkshire’s plan to put the matter to rest.

That included the appointment of a majority-independent board to what is a cooperative society – although this would not be unprecedented – and a proposal to indemnify Lord Patel over his decision to pay Rafiq £200,000 in compensation and sack the club’s entire coaching team at a potential cost of millions.
