Key and Stokes have been making so much noise about Broad and Anderson
that I'm getting the feeling that Strauss was very much up to
something when not picking them for the WI tour.

He didn't want to sack Root, but he also wanted him to go. So he
inveigled him into thinking that his job was secure and that the WI
squad was being picked to look to the future. Depriving the squad of
A&B was to make sure that they had as little chance as possible
without it looking utterly silly. As Strauss hoped, the series went
poorly and Root had no clue how to do better, so it became blindingly
obvious he had to resign. Job done, and faces saved all round.

Cheers,

Mike

That's pretty compelling but I don't see anything that points towards
intent. Maybe Strauss is a complete mastermind; if he did wangle that
then he's in the wrong job.
