Almost half of cricket fans do not think the sport has a significant problem with racism
The survey follows the recent racism scandal involving Azeem Rafiq and the abuse directed racist abuse at England players after Euro 2020

Fewer than half of cricket fans believe the sport has a problem with racism despite the major furore in recent months sparked by the Azeem Rafiq case, according to a new survey.

An Ipsos poll suggests cricket supporters remain divided on the issue, with 48 per cent responding that discrimination was not a big problem or not a problem at all. A total of 49 per cent who described themselves as lovers of the sport said racism "was a very or fairly big problem".

According to the data, football fans are more likely to believe their sport has a significant problem with racism compared to followers of either cricket or rugby union. Ipsos interviewed 2,051 people aged 16 to 75 earlier this month, with 921 describing themselves as football fans, 519 as rugby union fans and 447 as cricket enthusiasts.

The research found 68 per cent of football fans considered their sport to have a very or fairly big problem with racism, compared to 49 per cent in cricket and 31 per cent in rugby union.

So the headline writer thinks that something that is "not a big problem"
is not significant, and Morgan interprets anything that is not "a very
or fairly big problem" as not a problem at all.

Then again, I suppose we shouldn't expect accuracy from a paper that
describes Wisden as a pamphlet.

AFAICS, Ipsos hasn't published the percentage who actually said that
they consider racism to be "not a problem at all" in cricket.

Given the figures quoted, another possible headline would have been "A
majority of cricket followers believe the sport has a big problem with
racism", since there are fewer who belong to the category the
Torygraph and the illiberal bigot extol.

Still, a newspaper which uses Boris Johnson's moral compass is bound
to make the odd slight error.

Cheers,

Mike

I watched the 1st episode of Wacky Races today from 1968. The Ant Hill
mob were lost and found themselves in a little house with 7 seats and
7 beds and 7 little outfits. A car pulled up outside and the boss said
"right you mugs make like 7 dwarves". They put on the little outfits
and all started acting like puppets and going bla bla bla.
I laughed out loud, not because it is very funny, but because it's so
not at all funny these days.

It is not the headline writer it is the number of those polled . The fact that nearly half of these in these pc times were willing to stick their heads above the parapet is reassuring and impressive. RH
