Why is the case being heard before a judge and no jury ? I thought
defamation cases were heard before juries.

Because they have decided that they are more likely to get a better
result with a judge alone given the allegations of what he got up to.

From that article:

"Ordinarily, where any party to a defamation action in New South Wales
so elects, there will be a trial of that action by a jury."

So it seems pretty easy for there to be a jury in a defamation action.
