I have been getting an error message in my backup log for a while and I
have been trying to discover the issue.

My main PC (Win 8.1) machine backs up to my QNAP overnight using SmartSync
Pro 4 and for one zip file and the extracted mp3 it won't copy it to the
QNAP saying "Access is Denied". I have tried to copy the files using
Windows File Manager with the same result. Backup of the main data
directory is fine and the log shows several files backed up OK. I have
also tried to copy a completely different file with the same result.

File permissions is a black art to me but it seems that on the QNAP I
don't have permission to write to a directory. Does that make sense? Since
it is happening with other files as mentioned above it seems likely I need
to change my permission (or something?) on the QNAP, not on the file.

Can anybody steer me as to what I need to investigate please? With Windows
I can usually resolve something like this using "Take Ownership".

Many thanks.

Sorry to follow up my own post.

I copied the files to a freshly formatted (Fat 32) thumbdrive to try and
clean any permissions off but they wouldn't copy from there to the QNAP.

I have asked in the QNAP forum and they are stumped!

Heh, earworm? ... :)

In a command prompt, try the icacls command on the file. Compare the
access listed with that for another file. Anything strange?

Success!

It was a permission issue, the particular directory was read only for
everybody except an administrator. I've changed it to r/w for everybody
although I suppose that has its dangers but I'll have to think that
through separately.
