England have marked the start of their new red-ball era by handing just two new caps for the Test series against New Zealand, and leaving out Ollie Robinson.

Matty Potts and Harry Brook have both been called up for the first time, Durham’s Potts - who is in line for a Test debut after taking 35 Championship wickets already this season
The other most significant decision is a first Test call-up for Yorkshire’s Brook, who has scored 758 runs at an average of 151.6 so far this Championship season. Brook is the spare batsman in the squad, with Ollie Pope lined up to bat at number three for the first time in his Test career. Jonny Bairstow will move up to number five, with England deciding against resting him following the Indian Premier League campaign, with Joe Root shuffling down to four in his first Test back in the ranks and Stokes moving to number six.

I think using the word axe is a bit harsh. Robinsons had several problems with injury and fitness since
the ashes, so they are probably wise to wait til theyr sure hes fully recovered. However I think hes
a much better bowler than overton.

But it seems at least for the first 2 tests our top 3 will be Crawley, Lees & Pope which makes me fear
that we will be 3 down very quickly. Could they not pick a genuine no3 for a change? So Durham have
3 players in the squad even though theyr in the 2nd div, surely good news for other also rans. Brook is
1 of these batters who holds his bat behind his head like a periscope, but its been working well for him
this season, well each to his own i guess. Bairstows been in the IPL so will he have any FC cricket
before the 1st test? Not ideal.

I guess they will want a spinner at Lords so a likely XI

Crawley,
Lees
Pope
Root
Bairstow
Stokes
Foakes
Overton or Potts
Broad
Leach
Anderson

The only thing that excites me about this batting line up is Stokes @ #6. And of course the taken-for-granted Root.

I think the main problem with both Crawley and Pope is that they're TOO
exciting, attacking balls that given the match situation at the time
should have been defended or left alone.

yes but I cant see macullum reigning in their attacking flair ;)
and presumably lees will continue his role as top order limpet.

Is it possible to make up a test XI of discarded england openers from the counties
barring the current 2?

Cook [well retired in his case]
Jennings [pity the poor members who had to watch him for 9 hrs at headingley]
Burns
Sibley

Duckett ? Vince? someone else?
