'Office', as in London Mint Office appears to be another example of this

I have not fallen for the commemorative 'coin' offer having fallen back
into my slumbers.

Or as somebody did some time ago, call yourself the real product company.
Real offers genuine copies of Rotary watches.

I'm not sure if even the real coin for commemorating anything are worth a
lot. A friend looked at my Marriage of Charles one and suggested the
precious metal was only very shallow, probably over some cheap base metal.
Still at least you did get some precious metal!

Aluminium (sp?) was once a precious metal. I heard the story of someone
who bought gold in Dubai (or somewhere in the Middle East) which rusted
when it got wet, and there was a story that Western Australia is using
more base metal in their `Gold'. Did you mention something about the
wedding of Charles I?.

Maria Theresa thalers, popular in parts of Africa, and made in the UK in
recent years are fairly genuine

"Mountain Warehouse" seems to get away with it, in spite of not having
storage room for a single hill.

Ah; Farm Shops and Family Butchers.

I've only once see a house move. (it was a Tudor? market house in the
"wrong" place in a High street - it was jacked up and a BFO tractor used to
pull it at about 1 yard per hour).
Lot's of people are lying when they say they've moved house.

The Zoological Stores in Nottingham was just the same - not a zoo
anywhere. Don't know if it's still there, but since they don't sell what
they claim, I rather doubt it.

I remember a story of a man going into a metal providers, and asked what
sort of stainless steel they had. Someone brought out a thick book,
``This is a list of some of them.''

A monger is a seller, so iron seller.

Costermonger is more interesting; believe a coster was a type of
medieval apple, but I could be wrong.

Yes and in whaling, they used to have so called factory ships. As far as I
can tell, they simply chopped up whales.

Yes well, I have a friend who went to Ecuador and there was at one place a
gift shop of locally produced products. Now I do not doubt that some of them
were, but a lot were not.
For example a beaker and butter dish in glass both turned out to be made in
France, and the snowglobe proudly giving the local mountains name was made
in China.

She said they did have locally produced leather goods, and some hand made
pottery, but little else.

That reminds me of a goon show. I don't recall it all, but it seems they
wanted a mountain for the tourists. I don't think poking fun at tourism is a
new idea. Look at the Canary Isles. All the new developments import sand
from Algeria to make the beaches look golden, as most of the local sand is
volcanic and a dirty grey colour.

Yes what is a monger? You get them that do it to fish as well.

It must be an old word for seller or something.

When you think back to all the terms we never use any more.
Such as Haberdasheries, and what you mentioned, it does make you realise
the passage of time and its effect on the culture.

Through the door, exactly like you got the Elephant in.
This set me thinking about brand names.
Back a very very long time ago, when hi fis had no headphone sockets and
use valves not Transistors, people needed a headphone socket, so a company
which made stuff all over the world made and sold these sockets complete
with hi power resistors etc inside.
For reasons not entirely clear the name they chose to use was Brasennoze.
They were everywhere, mainly due to them being very well made, but who did
come up with that name one wonders.

I have a dim memory of a collage in one of the English Universities
called something like `Brazenaze'
