Just though I would update assembled Sheddi on my attempt to die an
alcoholic.

The whisky has worked in getting me to sleep despite the pain, but I'm
finding I have to chase the dragon to get the same affect each night. It
has totally failed tonight as you might have gathered, even after 2/3 of
a litre of the amber nectar.

And, as has been pointed out by a fellow Sheddi, t'ain't cheap.

It is truly a Catch 22, even Catch 33 situation. I can't sleep because
of the shooting leg pains. Whisky gets me to sleep but by increasingly
uneconomic proportions. Prescribed pain killers write me off during the
following day as a zombie. Don't wanna be a zombie. Can't function as a
zombie.

End it all? Naah. Cowards way out.

So............. dunno yet. Work in progress.

What has the GP tried? I get by on a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
(naproxen currently) and paracetamol combination. I don't like opiates
(codeine, morphine) because of brain fog, constipation and, quite quickly,
addiction but they help many folk. If (and it might be, as you said
"shooting" pains) it's nerve pain there are a number of other possibilities
that aren't actually pain killers that might help.

CBD, lots of it (don't bother with the junk in the shops it contains
homeopathic quantities) cookies made with about half a gram of a very high
CBD strain would be ideal, failing that old black hashish (real not soap
bar) - reduces pain and induces lethargy. It's an over the counter product
in Washington state weed shops, glod only knows how to get reliably on this
side of the pond - you *don't* want high THC strains (well you might but
not for pain control and sleep).

This is likely just as bad for the wallet as whisky but not so hard
on the body.

Your GP isn't allowed to prescribe it, but can give you "Get out of
gaol free" card, so that when the rozzers find it, they don't arrest
you. The boater I knew who had one never seemed to have trouble getting
hold of it, possibly via her pharmacy.

Stupid question: Have you tried elevating your leg whilst in bed? I
did wonder if even a couple of inches might help (as the actress said to
the bishop).

A Lady I know and dislike intensely, visits a private hospital and gets
treated for `pain' weekly. In A private hospital, everything is
possible, including treatment with Oxycontin (sp?). Incredibly (to me)
it is still available under prescription here.

Ask for a referral to a specialist Pain Clinic- there should be one in a
local hospital.
