morning, it was the load banging of the bins and their contents.

The flats across the road have those large metal rubbish bins which are
emptied at about 6:30, 7 days a week. The bins and that infernal
reversing sound that wake me up every day. I do not hear the lorries
draw up until they switch into reverse.

I seem to recall a science fiction book or short story starting like that.
Turns out that the garbage men were collecting people (possibly dead, or
just old). I thought it might be "Make room! Make room!" but I've just
checked and that starts differently.

Three years ago I expected the bin men to wake us all with a fortnightly
call of "Bring Out Your Dead" and a man with a paint brush and a pot of
red paint!
