I think that this is a legal requirement, and that all cars with lane
assist have some system for making sure hands are on the wheel. Serpently
my old Prius required me to keep my hands on the wheel as does the Tesla,
though there are rumours that the weight of an orange jammed into the
steering wheel is enough to fool it, so yoga might be possible. I dislike
it because I'm not yet sure just how much pressure to apply - too little
and it thinks I've gone to sleep, but too much and it thinks I'm trying to
take over the steering.

I got used to it on the Prius after a few months and I'm becoming
accustomed to it much faster on the Tesla. Quite like it, though I switch
it off when approaching my turn-off - don't trust it that much yet, and it
will take me a while to get used to automatic overtaking, but I'll get
there.

I dislike anything which interferes with driving, especially power
steering. You can't feel the difference in grip.

F'rinstance, going up to Stornoway/Pairc for Hogmanay, we took a short
cut over The Struie, we were being followed by a blizzard, so any saving
of time was to the good. John, driving, felt that we might have a
puncture or flattening tyre, so he pulled-up, got out and promptly fell
over. We were on black ice - the wind-blown snowflakes had polished the
ice like glass. Without his power steering he would have detected it
much sooner.

He tried to turn the car, but there was zilch grip,so I got out, put my
foot against the kerb and tuned the car round as if it was on a
well-oiled turntable.

Proceeded back safely and rejoined the main road, which by then, had
been salted and gritted.

All these other gizmos I reject utterly. If I'm driving, *I'm* in charge.

I was driving vans and lorries around that time, and the firm got a
naughtymatic Transit 'to make things easier' in a mutly-droop
environment. Rod was somewhat surprised to find I was driving it as near
as possible in gearshift mode - it was often not in the gear I wanted
it, and often tried to shift into a gear I did *not* want it.

I expect that side of things has changed since then (late 1960s) but
just reading this fred I can see changes for the worse are still being
perpetrated.

Best to all in Stornoway, I was there once, everyone seemed to be working
at the oil rigs. I suppose that is finished now.
