Fair enough, he's the best person to know when to quit.

He is playing one more game against SA tomorrow

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/cricket/2022/07/18/ben-stokes-retire-one-day-cricket-focus-england-test-captaincy/.
Ben Stokes has announced his retirement from one-day cricket to focus on his role as England Test captain, with Tuesday’s clash against South Africa to be his last match.

Stokes will continue to play T20 cricket for the national team, but says that “three formats are just unsustainable” since taking on the red-ball captaincy.

Has anyone from any country previously retired only from 50-over
cricket?

Plenty have retired from Tests to concentrate on white-ball, but
junking just one of the white-ball formats is unusual.

If nothing else, it shows where one modern cricketer's priorities lie.

Cheers,

Mike

cricketers *and* administrators.
CA has been hinting about reducing the number of ODOs for a year or so now.
No prizes for guessing why.

well i'm very pleased to hear this, plus hes not in the 100.

on a postive level, i hope it shows that hes concentrating on tests and his
role as captain. my only concern is that it may mean that his knee problem
is more serious than they want to admit. I can understand why hes not
dropping the T20 becos of the upcoming WC. Although there are plenty of
seamer all rounders in the CC game, most of them are medium pacers or
batters who bowl a bit, none of them a really 80mph+ types, so theres no
ready replacement. Its another headache for JB.

From what I gather, he has decided that he, personally and
single-handed, is going to save Test cricket for the next hundred
years. He's on a mission, and the 50-over stuff can go hang because it
doesn't give him anything useful. T20 is ideal for practicing hittng
in a game situation, so that's worth doing.

Cheers,

Mike

Kevin Pietersen wanted to quit ODIs only in 2012, but was told that he couldn't pick and choose between white-ball formats, so retired from both - then reversed his decision a few months later.

ODOs are doomed. Such a crap format compared to Tests and T20. They filled their purpose, but it's time to say bye-bye.

A decade on, and no board would dare telling players which combination
of formats they are "allowed" to play or retire from.

my mistake: hes not gonna play in the T20 WC. and he had some choice words for
the schedule, that is playing odis at the same time as tests = silly. I agree,
actually bloody daft.

i dunno how those spectators managed to watch 6hrs of cricket in 38C
on tuesday.
