He added 306 for the 3rd wicket with Colin Ingram, and 461* for the 6th
with Chris Cooke. That appears to be the first ever instance of
quadruple- (or more) and triple-century partnerships in the same FC innings.

There has been at least one previous occurrence of two 300+ stands in an
innings, for Hyderabad v Andhra in 1993/94, when Maruti Sridhar added
344 for the 4th wicket with Vivek Jaisimha, and 326 for the 5th with
Noel David in an innings of 944/6d.

Cricinfo's report also mentions that the Glamorgan records for the
highest individual score, team innings and partnership were all broken,
that Leicestershire's 584 is "thought to be" the highest total by a team
that lost by an innings, and that Northeast and Cooke's partnership is
the 2nd highest in FC cricket for the 6th wicket (after George Headley
and Clarence Passailaigue's 487* for Jamaica v Lord Tennyson's XI in
1931/32).

Northeast is a wasted talent. He was brilliant allrounder (he bowled off spin) while he was at Harrow (one of the strongest cricketing schools) but his bowling was absolutely neglected when he went to Kent.

As for his batting he has 11556 1st class runs 38.8, a better record than many a recent England batsman. RH

Or that relying on 1950s schools' rankings relative to university and
professional cricket might be a slightly flawed approach. There are
hardly any thickoes whose sporting ability has got them into a
highly-ranked school left. There is no prestige in sporting success
for public schools any more: all that matters is strings of A* results
and Oxbridge entrance.

He was a successful batsman in FC cricket for Kent so there was not any obvious reason to explain the failure to use him as an offspinner. RH

Private schools offer formal sporting scholarships these days which imp[roves the chances of getting top notch cricketers than the older informal system for dons ( both at schools and universities) choosing talented cricketers, footballers etc. managed RH

Nasser Hussain was a well-above-average leg-spinner as a teenager.
Then he finished growing and found he could no longer land the ball.
So the most likely explanation for Northeast not bowling while at Kent
is that he was no good any more.

It's also possibly like the guy I knew who was a successful Lord's
school opening batsman and batted at number 11 in county cricket
because the bowling was far too good for him.

The village idiot pronouncing on his social superiors has the air of
the grubby urchin with his face pressed against the window, unable to
fully understand what he's seeing. For those of us who have moved and
still occasionally move in those circles, his parody of reality is
quietly amusing when it isn't laugh-out-loud hilarious.

Who has said that he wasn't and off spinner? How many wickets did he take in his last year at school? You do understand that school curriculum cricket is not the same as professional cricket, or maybe you don't. How do you know his bowling was neglected who has said that apart from you? Would you rather waste resources on a bowler who is clearly not good enough to become a bowling asset, or do you continue to support your international quality off spin bowler (James Tredwell)?

Actually, the grubby urchin has chosen to rant about Northeast's
record as a schoolboy off-spinner being in stark contrast to his
non-existent f-c bowling, which apparently means he could have been a
stellar all-rounder if Kent hadn't been so stupid.

No, I don't understand either, but then I don't expect to.

On the other hand, I'm extremely impressed that Kent managed to force
the innings victory. Triple hundreds usually lead to draws, the
likelihood of the game not reaching a definite result rising faster
and faster as the innings itself grows. Bowling a side out on a pitch
which has been yielding 400 runs a day takes a bit of doing, even
allowing for the energy-draining heat earlir in the match.
