I notice Ben Geddes [just turned 21] was captain of Surrey vs Middlesex leading mainly a 2nd XI side. Were the senior players all in the 100 or on holiday? I know the Nawab and Ian Craig were only 21 when they capt their
countries, and this wasnt even a FC match, but have there been younger
county captains?

My youngest lad is 22, I was astounded how well he can run a busy
kitchen. You never know how the young lads will get on until they get
to try.

In the 1950s, it was normal for captains to be appointed just before

Frank Foster was only 22 when appointed Warwickshire captain in 1911. He lead Warwickshire to the Championship in that year which was the first time that the Championship had be won by a county outside the Big Six of Kent Lancs, Mddx , Notts, Surrey , Yorks

He also did the double in that year.

In the winter of 1911/12 he played in all five Ashes Tests (partnered by Barnes) taking over 30 wickets plus scoring over 200 Test runs.

Pretty much. I think Surrey must have felt that - given they were going
to have to field a greatly weakened side because of the Hundred and Test
calls anyway - they might as well go the whole hog and give players like
Burns, Amla and Roach a rest in preparation for the Championship run-in.

Good question. Rory Hamilton-Brown was only 22 when he captained Surrey
in 2010 and might have been Surrey's youngest club captain (as opposed
to acting as captain in a few matches on an ad hoc basis like Geddes). I
suppose back in the days when the captain "had" to be an amateur, then
if the regular captain was ill or unavailable, if there was only one
other - very young - amateur on the staff, then he might have got the
job by default.

It was a great pity that a motorcycle accident during WW1 put an end to
his cricket, or he might have finished up with a Test record as an
all-rounder to rival Botham and Stokes, and perhaps have become an
England captain better than at least the first of those two.

Indeed. He was only 30 in 1919. and he could easily have had another 5 seasons at Test level taking in 1920/21, 1921, 1924/5 .

Apart from his bowling he managed a triple century in a Championship match.

Thats 1 name I'd forgotten. he seemed to have a tremendous future
until the business of young maynards death. I dont think he left the game
becos of that, but it clearly affected his career.

He was their youngest captain for 138 years according to the Independent.

https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/cricket/is-rory-hamiltonbrown-ready-to-be-surrey-s-youngest-captain-for-138-years-1938551.html

George Strachan (21) was their captain in 1872, although he also played
several matches that season for Gloucestershire, including two against
Surrey.

Even though it was prior to the qualification rules on which county you
could play for brought in in 1873, that's pretty odd.

Although he didn't play a lot afterwards, 2013 at Sussex 13 matches 576 runs @ 32, 2 100s 2 50s, then he apparently picked up a wrist injury in 2014, whether that was an ongoing thing that caused him issues and explains his poor record that season or whether it was a sudden thing I don't know.
