i think this was announced some time ago, and i wonder if coverton is still fit
after the Lions match, at least he didnt finish an over and went off.

RSA have probs with their quicks too, Olivier is out, and Rabada had an ankle
problem, but with the pitches so dry, some of the media were speculating
whether if they might pick 2 spinners Harmer and maharaj [despite the beating
he got against the lions]. I think i remember this before in 2018 when england
recalled rashid to counter Kohli. I dont think he got a bowl! However I notice that
maxwell got the ball to turn off the pitch at leeds from the 1st over in the 100.
For england i spose Root will continue to be our 2nd spinner.

In fact despite these dry conditions most of the spinners in the CC have
been very expensive so far. Only 4 have taken 20 or more wkts at under 30:

White [the oz] 20 at 20, Harmer 46 at 23, Dawson 24 at 27, and Patterson-White 33 at 29.

Heavy showers forecast, but if we're luck Lord's might miss them. The

overland over SE England at the moment it's looking quite good.

i bet england wished it had rained all day, they really are in a mess
again. the openers were inept but none of them except Pope [and i
think he had at least 1 life] could cope with the safy quicks, with both
rabada and norty 90+. Stokes gave them the charge but got out
playing defensive. So I guess he wont do that again ;)

I never understand why they have these wednesday starts when it
could mean it will be all over by the weekend, usually the best attended
days.

No parched outfield at Lords, their water bill must be enormous.

Just the one, and it would have required a brilliant catch.

I thought that, apart from Lees, the batsmen weren't really culpable.
South Africa bowled very well in helpful conditions.

It's so that, by starting successive Tests on a Wednesday, Thursday and
Friday, they can give the players one more rest day between matches. And
most Lord's matches are a sell-out anyway, so there isn't a problem with
the attendances. Having a Wednesday start for a Test outside London
might not be such a good idea, though.

It was said on commentary that by some magic they've managed to reduce
their water usage by 60% from what it was a few decades ago. I can't
remember what the explanation was for how that has been achieved,
though.

Oh, and there was also an lbw appeal that was given "not out" and on
review was shown to be umpire's call. Not long afterwards, Root was less
lucky with the umpire's decision for an almost identical ball.

probably something like drip feed irrigation tech, which i use on my
tomatoes. I use an old eye dropper connected to a plastic feed
line with a tap from a water butt and adjust the tap so that the water
pressure from the butt is just enough to push out a continuous drip.

no shortage of water at lords after tea so hopefully theyve improved their
drainage too and recycle the downpours.

I fear you'll be right, though there's still some swing to be had. But
so far SA have batted very well, and England's attack has understandably
looked a bit rusty. It's also looked a lot more "samey" than SA's seam
attack, with all the bowlers being about the same speed and lacking a
left-armer. Of course that's largely down to injuries greatly
restricting England's options. I thought that Stokes might have tried
Leach earlier. He's already getting some turn, on what - given the time
lost to rain - is a pitch that's had only just over a day's actual play
on it. Presumably it's because of the prolonged dry spell.

I can claim credit for the second SA wicket. I went to the loo, was
away for three minutes at most, but that was long enough for me to miss
a wicket falling. (Or it would have been, but for the ability to
rewind.)

I wrote that during the tea interval. In the evening session, things got
much better for a while, before Maharaj and Jansen showed that it's not
only England cricketers who can play bazball.

i missed most of the play, but when i got to the pub, someone was exclaiming
how shite broad had bowled, and SB promptly took a wicket with a near
perfect delivery.

actually it reminded me deja vu of some of the previous 4 tests. We get through
the top order and all the main batters, 210-6 then get smashed by the tailenders.
they tried this short stuff, and mainly due to stokes it worked, but having done
that, surely with the tail, they should have just bowled length and kept it
as tight as possible and restrict the runs. worse the pitch is taking spin, i thought
Leach was going to be a handful, but I bet maharaja will be keen to bowl
if Rabada & norty dont run through us a 2nd time.
