True as far as usenet goes.

The aim is to replace Plusnet with Zzoomm who have a termination box at
the edge of the pavement and are offering speeds more than 10 times faster.

As far as I can tell they do not provide anything much apart from the
connection so I have to replace Plusnet for usenet, I have to find a way
of authenticating smtp for sending emails, I have to investigate VOIP to
replace the landline and anything else which Plusnet does which I have
forgotten about.

I do not use Plusnet for emails (apart from authenticating smtp) as I
already have my own domain.

But there is bound to be something else I cannot remember.

Precisely. This was the first tiny step on what will probably be a

Once upon a time I used to be interested in cricket but the last 50
years has seen the interest dwindle. I am not sure why - but having
been so keen on cricket my father took me to some Hampshire matches - my
interests in recent years turned to football. I now think it is because
I have a much shorter attention span.

It was the Indian Betting Scandal that did it for me and I never
really recovered my interest after that. All those afternoons on the
edge of my seat, just willing those few extra runs/wickets. All those
sleepless nights when play was on the other side of the world.

Then to discover that results had been stage managed to the benefit of
a betting syndicate....

Your hosting provider may well have - or offer - mail facilities.
Presumably you have them forward them all to somewhere (PlusNet? Gmail?)
as otherwise you wouldn't get emails sent to whitnet.uk .

My domain mail record points at the server hosting whitnet.uk so they go
nowhere near Plusnet on the inward journey. It is the outward journey
which is more difficult.

Ah yes. The server relay.plus.net seems very forgiving: I can use it
when not connected via a PlusNet connection, and with any From: header
(at least, I've used <assorted>@255soft.uk). Does not either your
hosting provider or your new broadband provider provide an outgoing mail
server?

Note that you'll probably need to add the new server to a configuration
at your hosting supplier (krystal in my case) to keep gmail happy; I was
getting bounces, but only for emails I was sending to people with gmail
addresses (and those only some of the time, which is why I initially
assumed it was something about the content; PlusNet's email
subcontractor do bounce some things based on content, which is
irritating), because the bounce message was similar (I think it said
"suspected spam" or the like). Eventually I worked out - with the help
of others - that it was gmail's incoming email server that was doing the
bouncing; apparently it occasionally checks with the configuration
settings at <host> when it receives emails from <address>@<host> that
they're allowed to come via <relay>. I've got details if you need them.
You've probably already done this, come to think of it, as you'll be
sending via relay.plus.net at the moment, same as me (note that what has
to be added to the configuration setting is not relay.plus.net but
something similar).

gmail (and yahoo I believe) have recently implemented yet another round
of protective settings to enable their users to receive emails - it is
an ongoing battle to keep up. I know that it was a pain for a while as
I have one (irregular) correspondent and I was getting my first email
bounced every time I sent one - but if I resent it gmail accepted it.
Eventually I tracked it down to these extra settings.

As far as I can tell Zzoomm do not have an email service - they simply
provide a connection. So a very basic ISP service.

Hmm. I didn't pin it down to "first one bounced, subsequent OK" -
probably as I tried to tweak them, so didn't just re-send.

I fear that's the way many ISPs are going - certainly email is something
most have ditched for new users, expecting them to go gmail.

Don't the people who host whitnet.uk for you offer an email provision?
Krystal do for me, though I've never used the outgoing part and have the
incoming all just redirected (to PlusNet at the moment). When I joined
them, it was a shared amount - I think 500M then (I took their lowest
provision, amethyst) - that was shared between website and email; since
my website was only my old Demon one (originally 5 IIRR, then 25 MB!),
and I have all email forwarded anyway, that was more than enough. (The
arrangement may have changed - and the amount, almost certainly
increased - since I joined them; what doesn't break, I usually don't
fix.)

namesco host whitnet and handle incoming mail but want to charge a
proverbial arm and a leg for authenticating outgoing mail. I nearly
moved from them (possibly to Krystal) when the last renewal bill landed
but it was a busy period and I did not want the additional workload
between receiving the renewal notice and expiry date and you must never
interrupt the wife's email service as you will never hear the last of
it. I do not know now if Krystal charge for authenticating smtp - but
need to ensure I have the time to make a web move next time around.

Also talking of the good lady wife does anyone understand passports? I
spent a good hour this morning trying to explain the difference between
the expiry of the 10 years since issue and the expiry date on her
passport and the rules for different countries - but I am sure she
simply does not believe me. Why have they made it so complicated?

I really don't understand what benefits all this gives you. I have been
using Gmail for over 20 years now and have access to all the emails I
wanted to keep, from any device that is linked to the web, anywhere. It
has good spam filters and I have setup rules to automatically intercept
any particular emails that I either delete immediately or archive before
I read them. Other emails are automatically labelled according to my
rules. I can change internet providers seamlessly.

I think this is an EU rule rather than a British one (BIMBAM). It is
needed according to them because if I travel tomorrow to e.g. France on
a passport with only a few days validity left on it, I could stay for
180 days at which point the passport is long out of date. Why that makes
any difference to the EU is beyond anyone's comprehension as they will
still know the date of entry from the stamp in it and can stamp it again
to show you have left.

Personal choice. I have a gmail account for various historic reasons
but for about 10 years or so have had my own domain and used the email
resource it provides - and also use it for the good lady wife. But each
to their own and most of the time it does not require much attention.

The passport rules are complex because different countries take a
different view of expiry dates and the last time around for reasons long
forgotten (I think the passport office delays were high) we renewed
early so will lose a huge chunk of extra months for which we have paid.

LW

We had asked for a postal vote simply for the duration of covid[1], but
when we received the paperwork it was a permanent arrangement.
Now that the "Who are you? Prove it." rules have been put in place, I'm
happy to stay with a postal vote.

[1] IIRC there was an option to have a postal vote for a limited period
of time - but maybe that caused them too much paperwork, so they ignored
that part.

There are two aspects: the
we-won't-let-you-in-if-you-have-less-time-left-than-your-proposed-leave-date
(plus maybe something), which applies regardless of when your passport
was issued, and the one that has got a lot of publicity today. The
latter one is - AIUI - that passports last ten (or whatever it is - ten
I think) years from the date of issue, and this is internationally
agreed, but before some point in 2018, the British authorities allowed
you to carry over up to nine months from an old one (much like the one
month you can get on the MOT for a car), meaning if you have a passport
issued before that date, it could show an expiry date up to 10y9m from
the date of issue (also shown on it) - which some other countries are
now not accepting. (I _think_ that means it currently only applies to
ones issued 2013/2014, but will roll on until 2028.)

My LA's recent communication about the London Mayoral election has a long
list of qualifying photo documents, which includes the like of Freedom Pass
and Oyster 60+ card. Remarkably they also say that they'll accept an
outdated one (which would include a passport or driving licence) as long as
the photo is a good likeness. I've not seen any other demander being
that permissive.
