England Flag
England
165 & 149

South Africa
326
South Africa won by an innings and 12 runs

England lost 20 wickets in 82.4 overs

England First innings
45 Overs
(RR: 3.66)

England Second innings
37.4 Over
Total
(RR: 3.95)

England run rate in the match 3.8

All England had to do was play circumspectly for a session or two and wear the SA bowlers down. . They simply lack the technique and mentality to tough it out.

He is of course overjoyed that England have lost. Nothing satisfies
him more than seeing England humiliated. It's why he voted for Brexit.

Given the conditions - especially in the first innings - and the quality
of the SA attack - I don't think it was as simple as that. In any case
on the whole England did play pretty circumspectly, with the notable
exception of Pope in the first innings and Broad in the second (though
admittedly Broad had his fair share of luck). If anything, Pope's and
Broad's relative success might seem to imply that the other batsmen
played TOO circumspectly (though I don't really believe that).

When you see how well the quota bowlers done, it's a good job that the
displaced SA bowlers weren't able to play ;-)

Actually I thought England's biggest culpability was their bowling
tactics, where this morning - even when they took a new ball which was
swinging - they persisted for a while with Stokes and Potts bowling
short at numbers 10 and 11 (not so much at Jansen), rather than calling
on Anderson and Broad. Potts' pace and usual style of bowling, in
particular, seems to make him ill-suited to adopting the "enforcer"
role. When Broad was belatedly called on, he took the last two wickets
pretty quickly.

I like Brexit, it suits NI. The benefits possible from our position
here are fantastic and the disadvantge is mainly created by emotions,
bigotted and secterian opinions. I'm apistivist so I like to see
things in action and not decide anything on simple ideology. As usual
NI politicos are excellent at hiding the demonstrable and promoting
the emotional.

Beware of laughing at assholes. Remember the German 2018 UN delegation
laughing and mocking Emperor Trumpet when he told the assembly that
Germany was way too reliant on Ruskie gas. They're not laughing now.

I agree that was mad but my point about batting circumspectly still stands. Moreover, the number of runs scored by the SA tailenders yesterday was neither here m nor there. England needed to bat carefully before the third day's play started. RH

Under Stokes and McCullum England have had four remarkable victories and
one very heavy defeat. Had Root and Silverwood still been running the
show, with England playing apprehensively as they had been doing in
Australia and WI, I suspect those five matches would have ended in five
defeats.

The the lack of nuance in the idea made it a certain failure. The most dangerous thing for England is Stokes' statement after the loss, namely, they will come even harder at SA... RH

You may not believe that. However, I suspect the players do. Certainly
McCullum and Stokes have said so.

Root said in a brief interview yesterday that he thinks he's played
some of his best innings this year with the new mindset, that it's an
enjoyable challenge to go out there and play that way, and it's a lot
more enjoyable to play this than the stuff they played under his
captaincy. Leach says he loves being told that he's supposed to take
wickets and being given fields with which he can do it (not that he's
been wildly successful).

Yes, it's a huge challenge to go out with the attitude that you're
going to take the best bowlers in the world apart, and it demands
immense courage and a whole raft of skill. Some people may well think
that being that ambitious is silly and destined for inevitable
disappointment. On the other hand, you certainly won't do it if you
don't try, and if you try often enough, you may learn how to do it
with confidence and reliability.

The SA bowlers all know what it's like to go for more than 20 in an
over: it happens all the time in franchise cricket. The challenge of
doing it over after over in a Test is an order of magnitude greater
than doing it a couple of times in one innings, but one can easily see
how it might appeal to an adventurous batter.

Who are jzf and the village idiot to tell these players that they
mustn't entertain such ludicrous ambitions, that they shouldn't strive
to be the best cricketers they can possibly be? And who are they to
tell professional cricketers that they shouldn't try and enjoy their
jobs?

Cheers,

Mike
